How many styles are there?

I know about the coil in cap model, then the next year with two plugs and external coil and now I get a new distributor with the crate motor that has just one plug on it and is a nylon type material on the housing and has a flat cap the plugwires going in sideways.

I'm not sure on my old one but I know the new one has a special gear for the roller cam. The question is to rewire the truck for the new one or not.

Setup on the crate motor is probably already timed and speced for the engine.

If it were me I would go with the one already in the new engine.

Anyone out there have a wiring diagram for a 96-02 ignition? It probably has the same wiring a the older two plug model but this newer vortec HVS distributor only has one 4 wire plug.

All i can tell you is those plastic distributors are junk, GM has plenty of problems with them and i'm not even sure why they kept using them.

the plug is a weatherpack, but im gonna agree with 4x4 those suck, the cap design especially they cause so many issues.

8 cylinder small block and big block chevy :

Standard 70's to 80's style ( own it )

ESC style with vac advance ( my 83 )

early computer motor style with no advance of any kind ( off a SS Monte 305 feedback carb , own it )

Large and small HEI for TPI ( saw before )

And TBI style ( own it )

Thats if IIRC :D

Well, then I guess I'll see if the gear on the new one will fit my old HEI. I'd rather change gears then mess with the wiring harness.

There should be no reason to change gears. The billet roller cams have a sintered iron gear and are compatable with all distributor gears.

I'm running a roller cam in my new engine with the same gear that was running on the stock flat tappet cam and no issues. You can call MSD and ask them and they will tell you as well.

Thanks for the info Scott. Is there any difference in the curve on these? I would think that is still all controlled by the ECM.

ALL fuel injected engines do not have a vacuum advance or mechanical advance in the distributor that is solely controlled by the ECM.

It’s not a weatherpack connector; it is a MetriPack 150 connector.

But I think I'm just going to run my old distributor since they have the same gear. :D
