it's a 86 cab on a 79 jimmy frame.all the lights work also????

i had this problem with my aftermarket tach about a week ago, apparently the light connection acts as a ground while in the "off position"
when i turned on the lights one night, open circuit on the tach... turned out to be a loose grounding wire

I point to the ground. I had the same problem when I took apart my dash. Ironically, it was the ground attached to a wire, to one screw. Made my whole dash go haywire when the lights were on.

the grounding i will go.the grounds seem ok , but i noticed tonight that i stepped the brake lines onto the steering shaft. 
maybee i got a ground wire at a different time.
