my go to stuff are all on the Snappie quick release rails in my bags... but in my box at home I'm using the lay down trays.. like these..

and I like em, they offer the most important thing for me in my box, easer of in and out... don't want something i need to clip in... the prob withe these is, i think the post hansen style would fit more in my socket drawers.. utilize the space better....

so any reviews on the Hansens?

i'm pretty sure if you search back aways (cant remember how long ago), dhcomp had a thread about those and quite a few people favored them. pretty sure scott (4x4high) also had good responses

I run them.

You gotta have deep drawers, which shouldnt' be an issue on a good box.

I only have one deep enough though.

Besides that, the F*cking stickers they put on there don't come off. I spent an hour or 2 just trying to get the stickers off, and F'd up the finish in the process.

Besides that, i've liked them. A few of the really small sockets dont' fit on the posts, but oh well.

I'd give them a try. I got a complete metric/standard 1/2, 3/8, and 1/4 set on ebay.

yeah, i'm looking at the 6 rack deal... and it's the bottom drawer of my KRL top box, so it's a pretty deep drawer, like 5" or something...

need to shop for 2 more of my snappie quick release racks in 1/2" for my bags also... fockers aren't particularly cheap tho...

I use the Hansen trays in the top drawer of my Classic 96. I have six of them. I like them a lot. I have no issue with sockets not fitting.

The damn stickers were hard to get off!

I've been running the Hansen trays for years now and I love them. I have no idea what people are saying about "stickers" :D just depends on where you buy them if they have stickers all over them or not.

The post is bigger than the whole through the smallest 1/4 drive sockets.

I drilled out one or 2, but its a pain in the ass, and i eventually gave up. :haha:

I have hansens too. Only thing I don't like about them is the smaller deep socket posts snap off very easy. I though about fabin some of my own using stainless steel rod and pressing them into an aluminum plate or something. Haven't put a ton of thought into it really but I wasn't happy when I snapped a post off.

Found this on Pirate4x4 regarding HF socket trays like the Hansens. Pic would not copy.

These are the HF socket trays. They've been on sale for $7.99 per 3 piece set (metric and SAE set shown). I think they're just as good as the Hansen sets that cost about $60 for all 6 pieces. I also noticed that Lowes has a Kobalt set that's about $25 per 3 pieces - so $50 total. The only thing I need to do is grind off the little hanger tabs and the ends....they're completely pointless as you'd never be able to hang them when loaded and they just take up an extra 1/2" or so of drawer space.

HF: $16

These are great. Not really a big deal, but reading the labels looking down into a drawer can be difficult. As long as the drawer is higher up (around 42+" or so) you can read the labels with no problem.

I'm going to check there out.

I have the harbor freight trays in both my boxes. The only problem I have is that the post are too close for the big 1/2" sockets

That would suck ass. Thanks for the info. I will say there is NO #1 BEST socket holding setup IMHO. There are good one and crappy one, but none are truely great. I hate how none hold a true FULL set of sockets. I have so many freakin sockets its not even funny, and I have all kind of different holders to see if I really liked that spicific one. Not one has stood out as a great holder. Everyone of them has pros & cons about them. Honestly the plastic Craftsman socket rails I like the best so far, but they will only hold so many sockets and not a full set. At least the 3/8 & 1/2 rails won't.

The more I think about it, I AM going to have to engineer myown socket rails or holders. Great, another project to add to my LONG list of projects lol!

I have the hansens. I have six of the red ones for standard sockets and 3 grey ones for metrics. Still have a drawer full of other sockets.

Got a couple missing the smaller deepwell posts as well.

Tool organization is a bitch.

Ok, so just taking a second to think about it, I want it to be similar to the Hansen trays, in other words a peg style vertical holding socket tray. I want it tough so the pegs don't snap off. I want the sockets to fit right and not wobble around.

I would like the entire rack to be able to lock or hold down the sockets if I want to take the entire rack out to use, which almost never happens, but if I wanted to take it with me on the trail I want ALL the sockets to be locked so I don't dump them all over the place and lose one or several.

Magnet style trays work ok, but the magnets atract particles so thats out, and I don't want my sockets getting magnetized. I hate that. I want the sockets to be able to be pulled out or from the tray with ease, a single hand operation.

I don't want to have to grab it with the other hand and yank a socket off the rack or rail or peg. How many times have you had your hands full and ya can't quite get the socket off and your pulling the entire rack with just trying to get one socket off. HATE that.

I want it to hold a full set of sockets, but still be extendable if you end up with an extra socket somehow. Since space is at a premium in any tool box I want the holder to keep the sockets fairly close to each other. With the Hansen tray I've had to drill the ID of a couple sockets out just slightly so it would fit the peg. That sucks ass as sockets are hardened of course. Good thing I have access to carbide reamers.

I do prefer to view the sockets Hex side up so I can pick by looking with my precision calibrated eye. Sure I want sized marked on the tray but most of the time we go by sight and remembering where the 9/16 is more then looking at the size on the peg.

I'm tired, what other mods or improvements can or NEED to be made for a peg style socket rack? How about WE CK5 brother work this out by brain storming? Anyone have any ideas or improvements?

Sounds like you need a whole bunch of the square drive portions of ratchets with the ball but backwards so the peg in the center is the release button for the socket. Work like a syringe sorta. Thumb on the peg and pointer finger and index finger on either side of the socket.

Why don't you just get a sheet of decent thickness material
Grab some Allen head bolts that are 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2" diameter,
Counter bore holes in the bottom of piece of material so it sits close to flat.
Add a tack weld to hold the bolt from spinning.
Put sockets on the appropriate sized bolts.
Maybe do 4 longer bolts in the corners, make a top tray that only has the corner holes drilled, and put wing nuts on those 4 bolts to trap the sports from coming out.

I got the HF ones, they suck!

they skip sizes...got some from Sears, much nicer. I had the metal racks with the clips on them, but after 25 years they are ready to retire...:pimp:

Ok, so I wont be checking out the HF ones then. Skipping sizes is LAME big time!
