after some hard wheelin and lots of reckless overheating from hill climbs and a mud clogged radiator the old stock 400 was doing lots of backfiring from the right side exhaust everytime I let off the gas on the way home. Is that a indication of a burnt valve?

Prolly an exhaust leak drawing in cold outside air...a rich mixture can do the same. Check your air filter, it may be somewhat dirty. Mud gets everywhere...

yea man i hear that, i got my 87 chev truck back in march the motor was clean, then about july, muddy as fu*k, god damn i didnt know mud could get all over a motor like that, oh well i hosed it off alittle bit and kept the radiator clean, even tho i never got alot of mud on the radioator, go figure, but yea might be a blown exaust gasket, or an overly lean or rich fuel mixture, good luck /forums/images/icons/grin.gif
