Looking at a 72 sportster with a shovel head 1000cc motor. Bike is in perfect condition. Not aware of the Milage yet.

What would that bike bring in today's market? Don't know much about it so trying not to get screwed.

Anything to be aware of with this bike? Problems?

Sportsters are a very small, bike.

i am 235 pound and 5'8" tall, and this bike had not enough go, and was small for me..

that bike in great condition "LOW MILES" (10-20k miles is considered alot of miles..) would bring no more then $4000 iin my opinion.

Assuming he put in the motor, you wand to watch out for install and craftsmanship, and why he put that motor in.. The frames arent that thick and cant handle large motors.

the 1000cc motor is not uncommon on those bikes, so don't think its special.

I would save your money and get a mid 2005 sportster 1200 cc. for less then $7000 with low miles...

dont bother

http://www.hogs4sale.com/Inventory_XL_SportsterP1.htm

here is site, that can help you determine good pricing and condition of bikes, you might even find yours on there

they are air cooled motors, that run carburetors, and might have hot running issues, and tilt drivability issues (leaning in a turn too far may cause cut out)

At elevation you want fuel injected. I've had both. Save your money and buy a later bike. Carbs at 5000 feet and above can be a pain.

You can get great deals on big twins unless you are dead set on a sporty. I've seen nice twins going for $4k. Early model sportsters can be found for $2500

ok luckily for you i know alot about this era ok im going to tell you right now that its not a shovelhead motor its called an ironhead motor. there was never a shovelhead 1000cc basically its a old sporty with a newer sporty motor. the motor is bout a 75-85 if its kick and electric its bout 83-85 if only kick its older but electric star can be installed on older motor. now is it stock frame and front end and suspension? give me a link and i can get pretty close to the price but ironhead sportsters typically bring 1800-3400

I wouldnt buy a sporster unless your less than about 5' 5".

I was thoroghly unimpressed with the 883 I rode once.

I road a 1200 when I let a friend ride my Victory. I had a lot of respect for her after riding that thing. It was at the end of 4 days of riding. That was the worst 100 miles I have ever riden.

Thanks for the advice, I think im gonna pass on it, don't like the idea of screwing with carb at altitude and I rode it today, just didn't fit right.

Very important to be comfortable on a bike, no sense in buying a bike that your back aches after a long day of riding. takes the fun out of it.

and youll be thoroughly impressed buy have a bit bigger bike then you need, better throttle response, road feel, less shifting, and more enjoyable overall. If you want a cruiser, newer for not horrible money (just opinion) go for a yamaha Raider, or if you like the harleys- I love my street bob (i have many mods of course) or if you want long travel time, maybe a road glide or street glide..just a thought

I prefer the carbs to fi on harleys. Only time alt is a pain is when changing alt. Either way I would not ride a sportster, 8 or a 12 and def not that antique your looking at. With Obama's plan there are some killer deals out there from folks he has ruined, so you can ride well and cheap.

A Recession is when your neighbor is out of a job. A Depression is when YOU are out of a job.. A recovery is when OBAMA is out of a job :waytogo:
