Has anybody done 'Behind the Rocks' in Moab in a K5? UPDATE

Re: Has anybody done \'Behind the Rocks\' in Moab in a K5? UPDATE

From what I've heard, the Rockpile went to [darn] in just the last year or so... /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

I guess the red rock four wheelers went in and moved all the rocks out to the go around obstacle so the guys with the smaller jeeps can do the trail /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

now the bottom of the rock pile has that big hole that we even dug out more /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif hell next year that thing might be a winch only hill /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

and to who ever cooked all the ribs for our monday run you guys did a great job.

next year will be here sooner than you think so start planning.

Actually, I had a great four days: a part of 'Behind the Rocks', 'Metal Masher', 'Poison Spider', and 'Gold Bar Rim / Golden Spike'. I haven't tried the 'Golden Crack' before, so this was a first for the Lowrider.

As for the ribs: I'll take all the credit myself, thanks. It's a simple dry rub recipe; I cooked them the weekend before Moab (kitchen looked like a battlefield, with Claudia seriously questioning my sanity!), wrapped them in foil, and kept them frozen until Sunday night before the run. I think we may have to do that again, no promises at this time, though.

I'm already planning since there are a few climbs I'd like to try (and make all the way, not just 7/8) next time, 'White Knuckle Hill', 'Rock Chucker Hill', and 'Double Whammy' come to mind; I don't think I'll have a real chance at 'Widowmaker' without a winch. Moab Rim looked pretty interesting from the Poison Spider side, so I'm already plotting....

we dont need no sinking rock pile /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif

it sure was pissing me off listening to those little bitches whine about us climbing the rock instead of taking the bypass.

I brought the big barbque this trip because we were there for 9 days so I wanted all the comforts of home.
next year we should all camp together and do a huge barbque after a run I will bring all the goodys in the enclosed trailer.

I was real happy with my rig besides the broken front locker but it still made every obstacle except for the rock because I pulled the front driveline in a hard bounce.
branden couldnt even winch me up the rock.
I was pulling him to me and had to double my winch to a big rock to get up.
I think me and my rig need to loose some weight /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Yeah no kidding...whataya expect though, they were just a bunch of jeepers... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I noticed a lot of those guys had their whole family with them. I think it was the little kids getting impatient because they had to wait 10 minutes behind us, which caused them to start yelling at us... /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

Lowrider, I never got the chance to thank you for the ribs. That was the best trailside lunch I think I ever had.

Re: Has anybody done \'Behind the Rocks\' in Moab in a K5? UPDATE

That seems strange to hear. I had no trouble at all with widowmaker several years ago. Whiteknuckle on the other hand was a BEAOTCH to get up. The right side is easy enough, but the left is another story all together. My cam, rest its soul, had to give its life up for that climb.

As for the sturdy bumper, I know a guy you can talk to about it. /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Re: Has anybody done \'Behind the Rocks\' in Moab in a K5? UPDATE

Tim, maybe the soil below Widowmaker got washed away. The pic in the Moab trail book shows a 3-4 foot ledge (with an XJ on it); when we were there, this was 6 feet straight up, maybe a bit more. The main trouble was the second ledge up top, with a K5 or a K10 wheelbase, the front would hit the upper ledge dead on while the rear tires were still on the incline and wouldn't provide much push. The fast that it was getting dark and had started to drizzle didn't help. I was the last one in our group to give it a try, but mainly because I wanted to know whether the float modification I had made to the carb earlier in the day would keep the engine running at that angle - it actually did. Bounced a bit, slid over to the right, came back down on the right rear corner, and turned the bumper into a nice smilie, together with q-panel mods. I got a firsthand demo how well your bumpers hold up to this kind of (ab)use because Dave hit the same rock coming down (actually with a bit more emphasis!), and his q-panel is untouched... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
