Has anyone ever made a full frame for a k5 out of tube? I have a lot of work to do blasting and repairing some rot in my k5 frame. By the time I box it, repair the thin spots I figured I could make a full frame out of tube. Much like stomis did for the trooper.

So has anyone made a complete frame?

I know I could back half the frame but I would rather do the whole thing. The "might as well" strikes again.

I would think by the time you mount springs, shocks, bumpers, body mounts, steering box, bump stops, exhaust hangers, tranny/transfer case mounts, fuel and brake line mounts, wiring, etc. it will be way more work than patching a frame.

No leaf springs on the new k5 :D Thinking the full tube frame would be easier to fab the brackets for the links off of.

a guy i was in basic with, him and his brother made a full tube frame for their first gen blazer. his brother is or was a member on here.

Yep, "ringmaster4x4". He has pics in the ck5 gallery.

There is a company in Montana that built frames for all kinds of vehicles called advance frame works. One of the employees broke off and started throttle down kustoms (TDK) doing bad a$$ custom bumpers for jeeps and newer rigs. Anyway old man retired and he bought afw out and does hydro formed frames, mostly for jeeps.

Reason I bring this up is maybe he can do the main rails, and you can built off that. I know the prospectors jeeps he does are longer wheel base and he does link stuff also.

I have seen his stuff first hand and it is awsome. His business is out of Moore MT and has a decent website to check out.

Looked at his pics. I dont wan to do a frame like that. I would be using square tube and basically mimicking the factory rails but with tube.

Cool good to know!

I vote build the whole cage in the tub. Then use the floor mounts as your "body mounts", and then the underside wouldn't need all that much work, build crossmembers side to side from the floor mounts underneath, and then some tube to connect everything. That way you can build the suspension how you want and not be limited as much.

Is this strickly a wheeler?

I would rough out some dimentions and build a buggy and throw blazer skins on it. Blazinzuk style.

No it will be a cruise everywhere rig and hit mild trails. Keeping it modest with probably 38's or so.

If you don't want to tube/buggy it, I would think it'd be cheaper to buy a used frame and box it.

If I lived down south or in CA I would buy a new frame and be done with it but I live in the rustbelt where dodges any older than 2006 are flapping in the wind. Any frame I find around here will have similar frame issues.

Yah thats the plan. I have no worry with the cage and the boxing that the frame will be plenty strong enough.

For you non rust belt guys this is the kinda stuff we have to deal with up here.

There was a member who built a whole new frame from something like 2x6 rectangle tubing from scratch. Cut every piece to the same length to where each bend started and ended. Welded up all the butt joints and ended up with a frame that look exactly like a stock one from a distance but up close you saw it was boxed and more beefy.

And no I can't remember who the member was. :doah:

Thats what I wanted to do. I figure by the time I blast the frame, reapir it add the material for boxing I could have spent the money and built a tube frame.

Edit here is what Stomis did for his trooper

If you're good with a tape measure and welder, it's only time and materials. If I was building something ground up that I want to keep for the rest of my life, this is the direction I would go.

What I did would be way easier with a truck than an SUV like mine or a blazer IMO. If you're going to link it I would do a 2x4 center section to the extent of the link mounts, get the middle section of the cab mounted and use round tube from there.
