Since diesel is so high and NG and LPG low lots of people here are converting there irrigation units to run on NG and LPG. My dad asked me about converting the diesels we have. Anyone have experence? What I am told is the engine starts on diesel then once it is warm the lpg is turned on and then diesel is dialed back to until the set rpm is reached. I told him I would want to add egt murphies to them to shut them off if they get too hot. I am a bit afraid of just flying by the seat of my pants and being the lone ranger.

That sounds like the vegetable oil "greasel" conversions, where the motor is started on pure dizzle and then switched over once warmed up.

Similar but we could never keep up with fry grease. These engines run 24/7 for days or weeks.

Well, point being you could prolly use a similar set up since there's lots of web info about those conversions. Of course, much of it is hippies driving beatup Mercedes that smell like french fries, but... :haha:

What you just described is forcing a controlled runaway. Circumventing the governor. Bad juju.

There are complete natural gas conversions. But there is no diesel involved anymore. I've worked on loads of Detroit series60 natural gas gensets. Those are fixed location, hard piped gas units.

So this is s fixed location engine that will be piped to a tank. If it can run on ng it can run on LPG. Tell me more about how it works or where to find info.

I am guessing the kits the local ng company is pushing don't require much mods since it says it will pay off in 250 hours of run time.

I guess a kind of important question here is...... What engine is it exactly that you have there.

3.9 Cummins 4.5 john Deere. We do have s n/a 555 Cummins but I would guess we will be leaving it alone.

I will call my guy at carb and turbo in Minn. He does a lot with power units on LPG.

In doing a little looking today I found the limitation on LPG is the octane is only 104 so it tends to detonate. The Max ratio for diesel/Lpg is 3 to 1 and most are 9 to 1.

This is one of the better kits I found. I have used this company to dual fuel 4 chevy Picks and Md trucks.

I just finished designing up a dual fuel kit for my duramax, I am running CNG and it it working great. I can gt 36 mpg highway no problem. I used info from the truck can bus along with a ECM I custom programmed to run the system and protect the engine
