Did you call ORD before starting this thread? If not you might have the common courtesy to do so before making your critical commentary.

Tie rods will bend when you drive them into rocks. Having a thicker tie rod simply lowers the odds that it may happen.

Did speak with ORD, (after the destruction) They told me that I could get a tie rod that was guranteed not to bend. That this one isnt guranteed but helps considerably. I assumed that by all the talk up about this tie rod that it wouldnt bend. Oh well what can a guy do but complain an opinion about steel. A lot of you are very correct but are taking all this very wrong. I am very aware that tie rods bend, this one shouldnt have, givin the circumstances. Its a kick ass tie rod, couldnt imagine how a stock one would have held up....

I have the same tie rod.

Calculating between it's width and a 5,000lb vehicle pressing it up against a rock, yes, it's going to bend however great or small.

i guess i am not understanding. if you take a 5000 pound truck and ease it into a rock and leave it, and it puts a bend in your tie rod.
yet, you take that same truck, and hit a rock with some force wheeling, would it not put a bigger bend in it? (force and momentum; physics)
to me it would stand to reason that it should be able to hold up to resting against a rock being used a chock block. probably a stock rod would do that.
everyone seems to be jumping on this guy's case because he vocalized his displeasure with a product, in a more civilized way than most on this site.

I think if he would have posted the entire story up front instead of dribbling out bits and pieces there'd have been less speculation. When the details are left out it gives a certain impression of the individuals motivation. Whether accurate or not.

There are also quite a few people using the same product in rocks (including myself) with no problems, so it begs the question. Am I biased in my view - yes.

Maybe the guy got one with a thin wall defect - who knows. But when you criticize a well known Vendor's widely used product you ought to make sure to lay it all out in detail to the best of your ability. Not saying he shouldn't speak his mind - just saying he should be more concise.

That's my take. ;)

so, since you have the same product, do you think it should stand up to resting against a rock? not being sarcastic, just really wondering your opinion. nor was i being sarcastic before, i was wondering if there was something i was overlooking.

it probably would have been better to post up the complete story at first, but his technique kept people coming back to see what was happening. LOL

and he has been more civilized than most of the respondents on this post, i really think the stupid people comment was uncalled for; especially with all the grammar and spelling mistakes in that post, even in the sig line. :D

I think the problem was the constant pressure. The advantage to DOM tubing is that it has some "bounce-back" properties. In other words it will bend and return to its original shape, within reason obviously. This is why DOM is used for roll cages, chasis, etc. Chromoly has even more resilency.

So by leaving the pressure on there for a period of time put the bend in there permanently. It wasn't able to move back to it's original shape. If he'd rolled into the rock and then backed up, it would have bent but not held the bend.

Rockstomper used to make a tie rod called the rock rod. It was supposed to be bomb proof, but people managed to bend it too. B_to_C has a bent rock rod and has been running it for years without issues. :dunno:

I feel your pain though, I'd be pissed about bending a nice new HD tie rod too. I just think you may have had unrealistic expectations. Live and learn, that's my moto. At least I know not to do the same thing you did, especially since I have a stock tie rod. :doah:

yes, that might have had something to do with it. i had not thought of that. it would make for a good expiriment to see what constant pressure versus sudden pressure would do. i have seen the aluminum rods for my jeeps and have heard good and bad things about them.

so flop it over and push it back :haha:

I figure he just has a little extra clearance in there now right? That's gotta be a good thing, right? :dunno:

I guess I can always have firefighter184 spot me on the next trail run so I'll be sure to bend it. :haha:

Is there a backstory to this we don't know the details of....

Yes, it involves crotch ripping, ratchet wounds, and bent rockers. :D

I shall never tell.

And don't forget about the eye surgery to correct vision problems that none of his "victims" knew he needed! :haha:

I had forgotten that part. :doah: It actually was the blind leading the blind.
