Head gaskets. No power?.

That's a good idea, never crossed my mind to put sealer on the intake bolts, will definitely do that when I pull the intake off this weekend!

Might be worth cleaning the oil off everything good with brake cleaner so you can pinpoint where its coming from..it could be oil puddled up on the intake and got blown back to the bellhousing area, and all you need to do is put some goop on the bolts nearest to the center on the intake,if it appears that is the source of the leak..not yank the intake off again..

That's the thing I can't really see where it's coming from, but can definitely and can't get to the back of the engine good enough too clean It, only way I could see it being done is at least pull the dist but then again that would be easier to do then pull the whole thing

It sucks, but you can lie over the engine using some plywood or a plank across the fenders--after taking the air cleaner off ,and get at the area behind the distributor ,use some gunk engine cleaner, brake cleaner, etc, and hose it off good...you can "powder" the area with cornstarch or baby powder, flour, anything to make a fresh leaks source more visible..

If those intake bolts are where the oil is coming from it may take quite awhile for enough to build up and get blown back towards the firewall, like a few days of daily driving..other sources of leaks usually wont take that long--a valve cover leak will show up almost immediately in most cases..

It doesn't do it immediately or at idle but if I drive it around the block by the time I get home I can smell it burning off the exhaust and as soon as I Park it's dropping at a at steady pace, after it sits and idles it stops, I used a white cotton glove and felt around the back of the head and valve cover and nothing but if I feel around the block where the head and intake meets fresh oil.

Well,if its only wet there and no puddles at the bolts in the middle of the intake, then its likely there wasnt enough RTV or it got smeared off during the install--you have to run a bead up onto the intake gasket areas as well as where those stupid rubber seals would go if you used them..

This picture shows the RTV bead--I always went up higher than that, right up over the end of the gasket-and I also put a thin coating on the entire intake gasket,I never trust a gasket alone, even if it says they dont need any sealer..(except a perma-torque Fel-Pro head gasket, those go on dry )..intake install.jpg

Well I see where I definitely messed up.. As you all can see I didn't even make it to the end of the intake!! :thumb:

You need to pull the intake and reseal the back side with a THICK bead of RTV. Also seal the bolts or oil will seep up on top of your intake. I had exact same problem when i did head gaskets on my truck. The bead of rtv is gonna be more than you think it would need......

Pulled it, replied rtv and also put sealer on the bolts and she's running like a beast now! :k5: thanks for all the help and advice! Awesome community!
