I need a recommendation on a new headunit. I want something with ipod control, 3 rca connections, fm/cd. I have good experience with pioneer and some sony xplode but willing to look at others. $300 max and would like to stay under $200. So what do you recommend?

I run Pioneer premier head units in my k10 and my sister's C2500 and they work great... hardwired iPod hook-ups and the remote controls everything.

I have a Dual headunit in Big Ugly. Spring '07 I was looking around for this stuff for Big Ugly on Crutchfield's site and noticed this company called Dual had products that were getting great reviews by owners. Their list of features and specs was great and compared well with Kenwood and Pioneer. However the prices were much less. To the point where I could buy a nicer Dual than I could a Kenwood or Pioneer.

I figured, "whatever, it's a loud as hell diesel", and bought one of their $160 or so units. Turned out VERY well and I'm very happy with it. Sounds awesome and has more features than I even wanted while not being too confusing to use.

Did take me a while to figure out the ambient noise volume thingy. That + loud ass diesel = much  for a while.

In the past eleven years I've had two Alpines, two or three Pioneers, a Kenwood or two, an Aiwa, and a few other random head units and I have to say I love the Dual. Right up there with the big names, a great warranty, and priced right.

I have actually looked at a Dual they have at the local Walmart. Really like the style and layout, has all the features I want, just figured for the price and a brand I had never heard of they probably werent any good. May have to rethink that and go look at it again.

just saw a dual in a guy i work with's lil blazer. SAys he's happy with it but it came with his rig :dunno: I haven;t bought any stereo stuff from Wal-mart in a while cause i normally end up takin it back.

the new duals IMO are alot better than when they first came out. Alot of complaints about those but it seems they straightened things out now :waytogo:

I got mine through Crutchfield. It's been my experience that they're either the same price as the local places or so very little more expensive that the extras and the service make up for it.

Mine is a XDM6830:

Obviously last year's model now. That's like $60-70 less than I paid.

Also check out their scratch and dent sale as well as their clearance and sale stuff. When I got the head unit I picked up some 3.5's for the dash and 6.5's for the doors doing that and saved some real cash. Enough that my "scratched and/or dented" 3.5" front speakers + the sale priced 6.5's saved me the cost of the front speakers.

yeah when i looked up my headunit on crutchfield yesterday it showed it coming with 2-6.5's

while the one i bought didn't  Crutchfield has always been a really good place to order from

I think I am going to have to go with the Dual unit. It just has the right appeal to me while having all the things plus some that I wanted. Will definately buy it through crutchfield though.

Thanks for the input!

Good to hear man, let us know how it turns out.

I am hoping it will work well. I got one of the Highliner headliners on evilbay new for a good price. Plan to put the cb in the radio spot in it and keep the radio in the dash (sort of, that is another topic) Hope it turns out well. I'll have to update in a month or so when I get it all done.

If you're lookin at relocating your headunit from where the stock one would be in your CC i'd suggest doing like i did and mount it in the middle but there's ALOt of work involved in this ;)

Need any input just let me know

heres a pic of what i speak of in my old brown turd ;)

This will actually be for the Blazer. The headunit will still be in the dash, but the dash will be....um.....altered. I plan to take two dashes and do a cut and paste to make one. Think of the flat panel where the speedo is as double wide. From this \__/ to this \____/ to allow for a custom layout.

I am still in the process of getting everything ready but once I start I'll be taking pics and do a build thread. The idea is to make for more room for switches, headunit, custom guages, etc. At the same time converting all the wiring and dash style from 79 to 89. Of course this means I'll have to try my hand at fiberglassing to redo the dash pad before having it reupholstered. Right now I am just hoping I can make it all come out looking right.
