Headed to Moab in Feb... any Advice?

Ok, here's what I'm thinking.

I know somone has to pick someone up in Denver, so the most sense is to go I-70 though Denver then onto Moab. ~1757miles (1day 2hrs)

BUT the downfall is we need to cross the Rockies with small block HP, 2wd, and more possibilities of bad weather all down I-70.

IF we go I-40 to Gallup, NM then north to Moab and let the other go (I-70 or I-40 to Amirillo and up) to Denver its ~1774miles (1day 3hrs) and we dont have to cross the rockies.

I have never been to Denver or driven over the rockies and that sounds more interesting, but I think the weather could hurt us if the roads arnt going to be 100% clear.

What do the locals think?

I'm not local, but I've been skiing enough up in Summit County. The passes on I-70 - Eisenhower and Vail - are a complete tossup in the winter. Everything clear one day, closed for snow/avalanche the next.

Actually, I once hit snow in late September driving to Blazer Bash...

I used to live in Aspen and will agree that the pass is a crapshoot. That is why we are trying to get Dean to fly the kids into NM instead. That way we can take I40 out and back. Side note its not making it up the pass that concerns me its the backside downhill and all the curves. Ive driven it in the snow and had no problems, but I wasnt towing at the time...
