No help here, but I noticed a huge difference just going with larger manifolds from a corvette, and you get to keep the rest of the exhaust system stock. I have been considering some shorty headers, so wouldn't mind seeing some pics of options.
I run Hooker Competition on my 71 with a 4 speed and on my 72 with a TH350. They fit great with no clearance issues and there only 170 bucks and the quality is really good.
My 72 had block hugger headers on it when I got it and the crossmember had to be cut a lot for them to fit. Most huggers have a center dump and the crossmember is right in the way. Just my 2 cents. I can take pics of the 72 if you want, just let me know.
+1 on the Hookers, I run the Hooker Super Comps on my 72 with an sm465 and they fit fine. The only issue is that they are pretty close to the starter and I'll have to loosen/remove them to get at a few of the spark plugs. I had hookers super comps on my old 80 with a 454/SM465 as well with no problems. Of course, you will have to get your exhaust modified to hook up to these.
Wow..Thanks for the responses, very helpful!! I have the SM465 i believe..floor shift manual. I ordered a set of hooker competition headers (#2453-1HKR), but when they came, it appeared the clutch linkage was directly in the way. BigMike...did you run into any problems with the clutch linkage? whats the part # of yours?
The ones I have are 2817HKR and I didn't have any problems with the clutch z-bar or linkage. However, mine are the super comps which different/longer than the 2453HKR or the coated ones you called out(2453-1HKR). You said those ones don't look like they'd fit? Did you put them on?
i didnt put them on. I just eyeballed it and it appeared pretty obvious they wernt gonna fit. I thinkin they may have squeezed in had i done the extra work.. The guys at Summitracing and Hooker said they were correct for my application.
The other problem is im not sure if there was ever any custom work done to my linkage preventing the headers from fitting correctly.
I relied on Summit and Headman when I attempted my installation and they were wrong. the clutch linkage needed to be bent and the right front spring shackle rubbed a hole in the tubes. And because their was a hole that I fixed by welding, Summit said they couldn't take them back. So be careful!
Bigmike72- 2817hkr are big block headers so the fit is going to be completely different than a small block.
jgfsurfer- I would start by finding out if your linkage is stock or modified. If its modified it may be hard to find any header that will fit.
I know my linkage is very close to the header (1/4 inch) but it does not rub. I have to put my header in from under the truck and it takes a little work to get it up in there.
jgfsurfer-I will get a pic for you. There is no motor in it but the clutch linkage is all on the frame so you can compare it to yours and its location.
My apologies, I am running the small block headers...I had just looked up the part number (for posting here) on the Holley website and didn't realize that I had grabbed the number to the big block headers, which by the way I have used but on an 80 Blazer with a 454. My 72 Blazer is a small block 383 so the correct part number for the headers that I am running are: 2827HKR. Sorry for any confusion.
The linkage runs through the headers. You have to take the linkage apart to get the header in and out. Cylinder #5 tube runs straight back and then sweeps down and back to create a gap for the linkage. # 1 and #3 run below the linkage. They look like they did this just for the 4 speed linkage.
