HEI question

The Blazer. I was going to change the plug wires and cap. They put this one on a chevelle on Roadkill Garage, and it put out a heckuva spark.

Yes, does that make a difference?

I have a nagging miss at idle. It's hard to tell if it has a miss revved up, when I pulled the old plugs they all looked as though they had been firing. And it passes smog.

I was wondering if this would help.

Yours shouldn't have amd HEI ignition in it. If it does, the factory ICM style ignition has been removed.

Try pulling the IAC solenoid and cleaning the tip on the solenoid and the port on the injector

Ah, well, I'm certain this thing is completely bone stock.

I'll check out the injector! Thanks!

It will do you well on Gold Bar Rim.

Just remember no clutch dumps, theres plenty of traction

Don't think DUI is any better than any better than MSD, etc. OK, so when it's new the voltage is higher than a stock coil. How long does it last? OEM was fully validated over temp/humidity/life/engine variations/vibe/altitude/etc and covered by the powertrain warranty. Aftermarket works for a week on some guys truck - ship it.

In October 2001 Four Wheeler magazine did a test of ignition setups.

Started with a used Accel 71000 distributor, used plugs, and used wires. They then tested with a Mallory, MSD, Holley, and Crane ignition boxes all with new wires.

Only the Crane beat the Accel baseline in max power, by 1HP.

Electricity hasn't changed in the last 15 years. In a "normal" setup, the HEI components are no limiting factor. Pretty sure there are more recent tests of HEI that show 4500RPM isn't where performance becomes affected either with stock components, but most of us don't worry about anything much higher than that. I know mine hits 4500RPM without issue, as that's where the RPM limit is set.

TBI uses HEI, timing is just ECM controlled. In today's environment, quality of manufacture is going to be far more important than how many supposed volts the coil can throw. Not saying the autozone chinese backyard rebuilt coil is going to be just as good as a more expensive name brand one, however even with name brand you don't know what you are getting. Even the Delco coils are probably coming from china now.

GM used the same coils when they ran a .080" gap as they did jumping a .035" gap. Most "cheap" upgrades are sales pitches. There is a grain of truth to all of it, under certain circumstances some engine would do better with a different coil, or air filter, or fancy plugs, or wires, etc., but the average engine in the average application? Marketing hype.

Thanks, good info. I didn't realize the ignition was different with TBI motors, I have a lot of learning to do. My previous 3 squares were all carbed.

Essentially all the same, changed the size for the small cap stuff, but basically it's all the same. Cap, rotor, and either coil in cap or separate coil. And obviously the connectors changed with EFI, but the HEI coil, cap and rotor all did the same functions from 1974 until GM eliminated the distributors.
