I recently bought a 82 K5 with the 6.2 diesel. had some worn out wrangler mtrs on it 35/12.50-15s. I just put on a set of mickey thompson baja mtzs same ply same everything. put 100 miles on the truck since and last night i went to back into my parking spot rolled about 5 feet and my truck stopped...i thought i hit something or my tires were caught up so i went forward straitened out and hit reverse again. same thing. drove it home no problem no sounds. got in it again to go eat and put it in reverse same thing. put it in 4 wheel drive and it pulled me outta the drive way...put it back in 2wd and drove down the street and my truck started vibrating really bad. pulled over crawled under it nothing appeared broked so got back in and tried again and it did the same thing...its now sitting in a hastings parking lot and i dunno what the cause could be...thinkin rear end but not sure...any thoughts?

Brakes come to mind since it locks up in reverse and not forward. You could have a shoe loose and binding when you back up.

If you have automatic hubs, they could be giving you trouble too.

Could you tell where the vibration was coming from? Front or rear?

The only thing I can think of that would have both symptoms, is maybe a bad front diff and a set of autolocking hubs that are engaging when you back up and are engaged now.

check to see that they mounted the tires with the arrow pointing forward...

They could be directional tires......

:haha::haha::haha:......... Just Kidding..... could be a brake issue like Fordum said..

well my brakes were squeaking a bit so possibly...has manual hubs so thats not the issue...truck wont roll in nuetral backwards either but will roll forward. i went back to it after i posted it and as long as its in 4wd itll go anyway i want it to. one of the mechanics i was talking to was thinking it needed new gears in the rear cuz it shouldnt be the front cuz the 4wd is engaging fine and still pulling the truck

Sounds like something has come apart in the rear brakes and its sliding down and jamming when you back up, but slips by when you are going forward.

If so, sooner or later its going to jam when you are going forward and tear something up even if it does not spin you off the road.

If you can jack it up and get the drum off, you might be able to save some expensive parts.

To get it home, if you cannot get the brakes back together where it is, you might be able to plug that side after you get the parts out and limp home on three brakes.

NAPA used to sell threaded plugs that would fit a female brake fitting. I used to carry some in my Jeep.
If I tore a line off in the woods, I could take the remains loose from the closest block and screw in one of those plugs.
Refill the master, and it got me home.

Since it was a single master cylinder setup, one broken line equaled no brakes.

jack the tires up & spin it by hand & see if 1 tire acts up.. if both sides act messed up look in the dif/gears. it can mess stuff up & be dangerous driving it until you find & fix the problem

ya thats what i was plannin on doing. so if it just locks up with 1 tires what do you think it would be?

could be any # of things, but you'll know where you need to look deeper, take wheel off vs. dif cover..don't drive it fast until fixed b/c if it is a loose or broke brake part locking up in reverse, you don't want to be 55 mph when it locks up going forward

ya ill just rip it apart there in the parking lot, its empty anyways. thanks for the tips...ill go give em a try and ill prolly have more questions...i appreciate it

Ok so my warn hubs were locked since the last time I went wheelin. So in reverese it was locking up. If I free the hubs everything is great but as soon as I lock them it locks up again. Any idea what it could be? Trucks pullin to the right as well. Broken hub?
