This is the read diff in my pickup. From lookin it over and comparing with the diff guide here I have to say its a GM 12 bolt. am i right?

What are my locking options for this diff? I'm waiting on a dry day to crack it open and see what I have for gears ... but I know no matter what I want it locked up.

The 12 bolt is the only one with 12 bolts holding the cover on...so I'd have to concur and say that definitely is a GM truck 12 bolt. :D

The con is that it isn't any stronger than a 10 bolt...:eek1:

Yes it's a 12 bolt. Here's my advice. Don't lock it. Try to find a full floater 14 bolt and lock that. I have broken front and rear axles in 10 bolts locked. A big waste of money and you caught me on the wrong day with this post. I just got back from a short day trip that turned in to a evening trip because of a broken front stub shaft. It seems that even upgrading your axles doesn't help much. Any one know if Yukon Axles have a life time warrenty? I can't find anywhere on the net that states this. Tommorow I will start hunting down a front D60. I'm getting sick of these weak diffs. The FF 14 bolts already sitting in my driveway.

I've thought about the 14bolt ... my problems with that are 1. Space to make the swap 2. The cost of the axel and 3. I really only just run through mud and only want the locked for that extra little UMPH to get out of a deep hole.

Its not that i'm not into rocks, just around here mud is alot more common.

Well, for a little perspective I fragged my old 12 bolt backing out of a parking spot...:doah:

14 bolts are cheap, although there is certainly more involved than the cost of the 14 itself.

A 14bolt FF wouldnt hurt all. From my understanding, there are 3 factors when swapping in a 14 FF.

1.) Spring perches: most likely need to be re-welded to the proper width
2.) Drive-shaft: needs to fit the new axle
3.) Brake lines need to be connect

A 14b FF here doesnt go for anymore than 300. Search and you can find one with 4.10's.

no welder :\

Get a 14 bolt from a 3/4 ton and the perches will line right up...

Even a SF 14 bolt would be a huge improvement IMO.

The Hell you say!

14ff come out of picknpull for 1 dead president, and 50 if you catch them on the manager special weekend.

time to save your pennies!

ok guys heres the point. I can't move to the 14 yet (read for a long while), but i do want to lockup that 12bolt. Is there a detroit in existance for that axel? anything other than the govbomb (no need to speed up my axel's apparently impending doom)

Just throw in a gov bomb like I have done until I put 14ff in there. It is holding up well for bog. I am going to step out of the bog scene and get into rocks now so I want strength. Once you blow up the bomb, then you will see the light aswell.

where can one get a bomb on the cheap??

and the other question i forgot to ask in the main post, I'm no master mechanic, but do have a passable set of tools. How hard would this be to install. is it just pop out old spider gears and slide in locker?

DON'T INSTALL A GOV-BOMB!!!! You pay $259 for the quik-lok and it's done. Buy a gov-bomb, have it blow up, then replace the ring and pinion...that would cost more than just getting the locker. Besides, the gov-bomb you will need to shim and set up the carrier, not easy for some people. The locker you just pull the axle shafts and the spider gears and replace with the locker and you're done.

teh EZlocker (which i assume you mean when you say quikloc) says its rated for upto 33" tires. I am currently running 33's.

Greated I'm now to anything axel related, but with vehicals in general i try to not ride the top of the recomended list, just doesn't feel right pushin it like that. Unless someone has one in a similar application and can tell me its ok.

I would love to see a pic of your Burb by the way. Guys here in Newfoundland try to tell me a K5 is too big for the trails. My answer to this.... I am thinking about buying a 3/4 ton Burb now.
