im about to give up. bought my 84 blazer tried to transfer the title/paperwork couldnt fully transfer cuz didnt have smog. no biggy, tried pre-smoggin it, didnt pass. can really fix anything to make it pass. cant put it in my name to sell it. what do i do?

Gonna need a little info in order to help you. Why did it fail? Did it pass the visual but not the tailpipe? What are the test numbers (specifically the ones that failed).

it failed on the 2500rpm co it was like 3.50 and is supposed to be under .95. it has everything on it that it should. i think the motor is semi built with a cam and heads. so if i smog it and it fails as a gross polutior can i still sell it?

The seller is responsible for providing the smog certificate when a vehicle is sold.

Are you saying that you bought a truck without one, and now you can't complete the registration transfer from the previous owner?? If so, I'd be headed back to the seller immediately.... the truck will legally still be in his name until it's smogged so he's liable for anything that happens until then (parking tickets, etc) hint, hint....
CA sucks for smog.... one of the main reasons why I didn't even bother looking at anything but pre-73 K5s when I first starting looking.

You just like the first gens. They're exempt up through 1975.

You are correct on the seller being repsonsible for smogging the vehicle, however once the vehicle is sold and the seller turns in the release of liability paper he is no longer responsible for anything that happens with that vehicle parking tickets or otherwise. :deal:

Especially if the seller turned in his release of liability form immediately to the DMV, which he probably did if he is smart. If you aren't a mechanic, I would have a shop give you an eval of the motor to see what it would cost to bring it into compliance. For all you know it could be something fairly simple and inexpensive.

Theres a few tricks you can try.

Run chevron injector or carb cleaner in your gas for a full tank... put a little tranny fluid in your gas, smog it and see if it passes. My dad did that with his 383 van. Passed with flying colors. Also you might try getting your carb tuned. Q jets are great for smog when they run right.

Also theres some stuff called "gaurenteed to pass smog" that you can try. As long as you don't have any faulty smog equipment they will refund your money if you don't pass.

What did the smog tech say about getting it to pass? Alot of times they'll give you a list of what it could be. Other option is to get out of cali to sell it. I beleive nevada and oregon don't have smog but don't qoute me.

yea he gave me a cert but it expired. and i dnt have any money to put into it. if i smog it and it fails can i transfer the name and then sell it as long as i say it wont pass?

and i havent really smogged it yet, i just pre-smogged it in my auto class at my highschool. if it gets labled as a gross polluiter can u finish transfering the ownership? or does it have to pass?

try some "gauranteed to pass" in the tank, chit works miracles... might get ya in the ballpark...

You won't be able to legally sell it for "on-road use" if it doesn't pass smog. You could fix it or part it out though.

could i sell it as a non smoggable vehicle for cheap?

You can sell anything you want, but it won't be able to be registered until it passes the smog test. You should be able to get the title in your name by registering it as a "non-op".

ok, but could i sell it as a non smoggable vehicle for cheap?

If you want to sell it you can, you just need to tell the person it didn't pass smog, and I wouldn't try to smog it now, just sell it as is, or you can register it non op and get a title transfer, you don't need the smog to do that.
Now if you are close enough to the sacramento area, I know a smog guy that could help you, he's a gear head and has plenty of experience in hopped up engines and can most likely help you pass it.
He's a ford guy but he's likes my chevy trucks:D

Thanks man but I live way south of you. So if I put it in non-op I don’t have to smog it? And if I state(even though it is a law) that it wont pass smog, I can sell it right? Let me know some options. I am not putting any more money into it. And I have partial ownership cuz I took it to the dmv and started to transfer it but he said I need smog.

Just go to the DMV and tell them to register it as a non-op.

Or you can trade it in for their $500 smog abatement program...

In CA, If he was selling a registered car (the PO) he was required to smog it within 90 days of selling it to you. I'm not sure what kind of action you can take against him but I believe if he sold it without the smog certification, and you took it in and it failed, you can go get your money back. Call your DMV IMMEDIATELY and explain the situation. They should be able to help you out.

Here's the link that says he was supposed to smog it: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm#BM2537

I would try to just make him get it smogged and keep it though :D
