I have a 73 2wd blazer with a th350. I can't get a wrench on the top transmission bolt. It is the only one holding it to the engine. I want to remove it without having to pull the engine. Can someone recommend a special wrench or some pointers on removing. I really need to get this thing back on the road. I have tried every angle I have removed the hood and have tried to get it from the top and bottom. Please Help Thanks

I put a couple of extensions together and get under the truck and send them up over the transmission itself and bust'em loose

I'll try from the bottom again. When I tried it this way I could not get the socket on the bolt it kept slipping off. Thanks for the response.

I always used a 3 ft 3/8 drive extension with a swivel socket on the end to get on the bolt head. Hit with a 3/8 drive impact gun and it will come right off.

You can use a swivel and a socket but the swivel sockets work the best for that bolt. Oh and go from the bottom running the extension along the top of the tranny like was said in the earlier post.

Wobbly extensions are your friends.

Also, if it is a '73, the tranny hump might unbolt, donno about 2WD's. Pull the carpet back and look ... if so, it's easier to get in from the top.

I concur that using a long extension with a swivel socket while attached to an impact gun from underneath works best. If you still can't get it just mark your dizzy and remove it and get the bolt easily from the top with a wrench.

take off the tranny tunnel and get to it that way. makes it easy to lower the trans down with a cherry picker too! don't know if you can do it on your 89 tho. they stopped the removable tranny tunnel at some point. :dunno:

My burb doesn't have it..

Just remove the body! :wink1:

I have 3' extension w/1/2" drive end and a 3/8 wobble end...got it at a garage sale for $2 about 20 years ago...I consider it priceless for the few times I have needed it.

Thanks for all the replies gonna use the extensions with a swivel. I don't have a cherry picker so I am going to use straps and a floor jack. Worse case I'll remove the hump if possible or the dist. Thanks Again.

I used to have a stubby 9/16" wrench, I could "easily" reach that bolt from the engine bay. I think the extensions from underneath to be the fastest method however.

You must have four elbows! But I betcha you can change the oil filter on a Honda :)

Naw, it will fit between the distributor and valve cover, and with the slight bend in a box end wrench, will angle towards the front of the truck, while still on the bolt head. It was a 12 point. Now in the exhaust system of a buddies truck. Note to self: don't drop wrenches when the exhaust pipe is in place but the manifolds aren't.

i agree with the extensions but do u also have the tran cross member out and have a jack supporting the trans and let the trans hand down there provideing more gap so you can see the bolt and run the 3' extension above the trans this may help. IMO. i have never had a tran just fall out all ways had to kick it to ge it to start letting go. then easy it down with jack.

I usually take the fan shroud loose and of course the tranny lines at the radiator and slip the radiator out. Makes it easier to tilt the motor down without hitting anything.

Also good time to do a radiator flush and always good to use compressed air and blow the tranny lines out.

Yep put a jack under the tranny and drop it down. I also pull the dizzy cap if clearance is tight.

a few long extensions and a wobbly. Fun times had by all.

FYI an ATV jack makes an awesome tranny jack.

Like the other said, Lower the tranny at the output and it is pretty easy to get to the bolt.
I have had no problems removing and installing my tranny w/ the transfer case attached with my floor jack. I bolted a 2 1/2 foot 2x6 to the jack pad and ballanced the tranny on that.

good luck,

Think I paid $60-65 for mine on sale ... priceless, that thing. Used it for bumpers, transmissions, transfer cases. ... the level lift (as opposed to the regular jack's single-point) is handy.

Got the tranny out today finally :doah:Thanks for all the help ended up having to take the tranny hump off. I tried several times to get the top bolt out and it would not budge.

x2 but doing it with a slight bend ratchet wrench.
