so a couple days ago i posted a question about possible transfer cases that can mount to a 700r4 tranny as my old one granaded on me. any who i ended up picking up a np208 at a pick and pull and just about have every thing put back together but i still cant figure out why it cracked the housing to crap. a bit of back story i put on a new holley truck avenger and went to test drive. i was in 2wd going about 20 down a paved road when i heard a repeating thud noise and felt shaking in the stearing wheel. as i was stopping my rear drive shaft fell off and when i got out there was fluid all over the ground, thats when i noticed the crack. my slip yoke was broken where the u joint sits in it and the c clamps on the rear diff were bent to the point of needing replaced as well as my front u joints being damaged (not sure if the front u joints is a before or after affect) the only thing i can think of is that my u joints went bad but iv never heard of it cracking a t case and not damaging the drive shaft at all. im hesitent about the new one with out knowing what caused the old one to blow any help would be appreciated

Post some pics if possible. Seeing the broken case may give a better idea of what failed.

kind of hard to see in that pick but on the other side of the slip yoke (where the cap of the u joint sits) the front broke completely off. theres alot more that got messed up, for example my front and rear u joints the c clamps on the rear diff and such. and the pics of the t case doesnt do the cracks justice haha ill get some more up as soon as i can. can remember if i stated it before or not but i did open up the old case and to my surprise nothing was broken or amiss inside from what i could see

First thought was that the chain broke, but if in 2wd and hubs unlocked the chain doesn't move.

Maybe the driveshaft bound up. How much lift? Post up the trucks specs and maybe some picks.

trucks got a 6 inch lift 350 (was told it might be a 383 never opend her up to look) with holley ta carb 35 inch all terain tires not sure of gears in the axle but im pretty positive they are stock gears for a 1/2 ton 700r4 tranny with 208 t case. for the rear drive shaft to fit the slip yoke needs to be slid out some but theres still about 3 or 4 inches of the yoke in the t case and its has auto hubs no manual locking hubs

also i should probably add that prior to the old t case failing there was a leak (no cracks) that i couldnt figure out if it was from the tranny or transfer case, im fairly sure now that it was indeed from the old transfer case

Drive shaft is to short first.
Its like you made the t-case four inches longer with no support so the drive shaft is just kind of hanging out there in the middle of no where.

More then likely putting a strain on the internals and the end of the case. Which is doing who knows what to the rest of it.

i am by no means an expert on drive shafts and the like (really dont know a whole lot about them haha) so please excuse me if this is a dumb question, what your saying makes sense but i thought/was told that sliding the slip yoke out to compensate for drive shaft length was fine as long as it sits enough into the case? and if this was the case wouldnt it have happend a while ago when mudding/on the trail or even on the road? and any suggestions on where to go to get it extended/ any idea of how much it usually cost? thanks for any help

Yes it does move in a bit but yours is like four inches past the bit. The shinny part of the shaft is soposto be in the case the rusty part is where it was out side the case.
I am just guessing as to what may have happened, that being said it would be a long time thing, With the vibrations killing it over time.

There are a number of companies that redo shafts. Both of mine are from Tom Woods. A place local to you would be a easy fix to lengthen that one.
