HELP ! identify this F.O.D.*PIC*

It's a machined part (not cast), so I would say if it's not part of a lifter, it could be part of the oil pump (like where the pickup tube goes in). Just a guess though.

You stated you previously pulled the pan. What was the reason for it, and what did you do when it was down. Any other engine mods since then....?

It appears to me to be part of a lifter plunger retaining clip. I cant think of another part that has a rounded wire like that other than PC type valve stem seals, but those rings are usually flat spring metal. We need to start pool for "guess that fragment". How about $1 a guess with the winners splitting the pot????

Good luck what ever it is! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

m j , i was told that it is probly an oil pump part , do you have any blown up diagrams of a sb pump ? and i remember a part sorta like that when i looked at another oil pump .

That doesn't look like any part of a SBC oil pump I've ever seen. It appears to be flat, where it's not broken. It very well could be an umbrella seal retainer. It definitely looks machined, not like a piece of something that got carved off. See if you can get a really strong magnet, take your oil plug out, and try and drag the magnet across your pan towards the plug hole to see if any more pieces come out. Maybe with a few more pieces to the puzzle... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I believe that is the ring style retainer that holds the pin, that holds the drive gear on the distributor. It would be easy enough to pop the dist and check it, unless I'm confusing this with another distributor type. Looks too thick for lifter debris. It almost looks chrome plated in the pic.

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif i pulled the pan and there was nothing else in there cept oil , i also cut apart the filter and there was nothing in there either. so far it seems it is just that one piece .

well if that retainer came off wouldnt the pin come out and cause chaos / damage? it ran just perfect when i parked it to change the oil .

looks like the end of a heli-coil thread....could be a burr off one of your covers, timming, oil, valve covers.

I say valve stem seal spring retainer deal thing. But, if it's that, it had to get out from under the spring and float into the pan. I guess stranger things have happened with sbc's though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree.... piece of thread....

Any funny noises oil burning bad compresion or anything else???

Go run it.... change the oil again if it makes you feel better and inspect for more metal.

Chevs use spur gear oil pumps so that section has nothing like the debris but perhaps in the pressure relief area?
my first impression was like above where someone said a thread ripped out of a tapped hole.
the size, near dime sized, was against that as I cant think of a fastener in a sbc that would be that big.
sounds like you have checked as much as can be checked, run it

update ! well today i went out to get the drain pan i used to drain the oil and by golly there was the other half of the damn thing ! <matching opposite side> i had even dumped it upside down and left it that way all day. wonders never cease . i do remember this part from when i checked the oil pump i put it on my pinky so i wouldnt lose it , but i sont remember for sure where it went . runs fine still no probs at all so i guess ill stop worrying about it . thanks guys /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Looks like the bottom part of a HELICOIL, you know the part your supposed to break off before installing a bolt. What makes me think that is lower part that is bent and straightned. Just a thought, thats what came to mind before i read the other posts, but I can see why everyone thinks its a lifter retainer. any valvetrain noise while its running? if the retainer is broken, you have probably lost oiling to that rocker. Just some ideas to kick around. Let us know what u fiqure out. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I dunno if you already found the awnser, I haven't read all the replies. that to me looks like the metal part of a positive seal valve seal. Just a thought

i don't know but i'm thinking one of the valve seals started comming apart just my $0.002 well good luck
