Help me decide if it'll make it....<---I'm back w/ pics!

Well that prolly did it. Driving 55 in OD with 38" tires unless you have like 5.13's you are lugging that motor/tranny bad:crazy: . At 55 you should have been in drive as to not lug the motor so much and cause the tranny to lock and unlock because the vehicle simply prolly doesnt have the power in OD to maintain 55 because the RPM's are so low. My TH350 is fine on the highway. I can cruise 65-70 with 4.11 and 37's. yeah if I go lower my hiway speeds will decrease, but for the cost of a pro 700R rebuild you can prolly buy a few TH350's with low miles or a handful of 465's:D I don't prefer a stick wheeling either, but for reliability they can't be beat, and as mentioned a manual becomes second nature fairly quickly after you own one.

I see your point but 1) I suck at manual trannies and 2) I don't like having extra junk to think about while I'm eventually driving on trails and in the dunes.

I know it's second nature for you guys but you have to remember I just turned 17 and I've only been driving for about 6 months.

Dude that is no excuse, come on. I am 17 too and I drive my truck with the 465 and I drive it like nothing. As others have said, its 2nd nature. The SM465 is an awsome transmision. I love it so much I will never buy a truck that is auto.

I garentee you that after a month you will get the hang of a stick and by 4-6 months it will be 2nd nature.

Also I don't know if its the od that killed you tranny as much as your 3.08 ratio axels with 38.5" tires.

How hard is it to set up a manuel trans after running an auto? I had a 5 speed in the jeep and almost wouldnt mind having a manuel again

Search on it, that's what I've been doing all night there is a ton of great info. in the archives of the site.

Oh and unless it's to rag on me for blowing the tranny on this trip lets take the tranny discussions over to my new thread on "Lets go round two on a tranny" to keep it all in once place. If you all don't mind.

stick if you can. built 700R4 aint bad.

heck, built anything isnt bad. But just remember to match the power to gearing and tire size, otherwise you will break something (else) down the road.

Tell me about it, I would love to stick with my 700R4 but since I have an old version it's not worth rebuilding. If I'm going to have to buy a new core either way I might as well look into some other options, especially for what the 700R4's are going to cost me compared to a nice and simple TH400.

a GM performance crate tranny is about 1k. dunno how much an art carr is.

With any other option, you might be considering if the length is the same. Dunno if it will require any repositioning of the tcase or not or driveshaft length changes.
