I guess its time for an SM465 swap :D :wink1:

That was my next question. I'll probably start a new thread after a while but now that I'm finally home and somewhat unpacked I'm on the hunt for the best bang for the $$$ tranny that I can rebuild and swap in.

I'm going to search for a few hours then I'll be back for some opinions.

Here are some shots of what we were able to do while we were there though...

wheres the real wheelin pics?

real wheelin' pics? that's like salt in the wound, thanks man.

Since the truck didn't make it and the best vehicle available was my mom's bone stock tahoe we didn't push our luck so the only pics we have are of on the sand road, not of back in the dunes.

my wife has a stock 2 door 2wd tahoe, and we've had fun in pismo, you just gotta keep the momentum up :)

ha ha ha real funny :(

try telling that to my mom and see what she says.

You know you wanna go SM465. You'll lose OD, but gain so much more. How much highway/ higher speed driving do you do? If you do more city type driving, you'd be fine. Plus you don't have to worry about the tranny anymore. :wink1:

If you put another automatic in get a good auxillary cooler and tranny temp gage. I like the stacked plate design like B&M.

I got lucky and found a local rebuilt TH400 on ebay for $125 when my tranny started to go. I threw it in the truck, had it flushed, and haven't had a problem since.

Just because your radiator was cool, doesnt mean your tranny was.

Its unfortunate, does happen with age too, but usually, slipping that you just described was from overheating/non torque converter lockup.

Yeah I never said that the tranny was cool I was just saying that I was happy that w/ 105* ambient temps. and me running the truck for about 2 hours I was happy to see that it was not hot at all.

As I have said before I really wasn't ready to take the trip and now that I have done it and have had a week at the beach to cool off and clear my head I'm glad I did because it would have happened sooner or later anyways. Now I have about two months until school starts that I can spend working some serious hours at the shop and spending money on building up my truck.

First on my list even before I get the tranny and stuff dropped is to order a tac, tranny temp. guage and the biggest B&M Tranny cooler they will sell me. ;)

Get yourself over to the BlazerFest and you can try my built TH350, or I'm sure one of the Central or So Cal. guys could let you try a stick (SM465).
Ought to be some CK5 around Fresno that could let you try their's, climbing some cars at the local Target parking lot.:haha:

blah! what's the point for a dd?

The point is always reliability, and never having to make a post like this one again. I've run an SM465 in my Jimmy for over 9 years, and I have driven my truck back and forth the TX (5000 miles return) Towed a 5500 lb trailer down to San Diego and back (on 35's no less... 3200 miles return) Driven to San Diego and back without a trailer, Moab and back on 40's (2400 miles return).

Total road trip carnage for me was an alternator in TX, then the alternator pivot bolt in Wyoming...and one rear U-joint coming home from CA. The U-joint got me home though.

A manual tranny is just fine for a daily driver. I'm finally replacing my SM 465 with an NV4500 though. Overdrive is a good thing to have. The SM 465 is getting a new home though because even with over 300,000 miles on it it still shifts properly, doesn't pop out of gear and has a lot of good miles left in it.

I see your point but 1) I suck at manual trannies and 2) I don't like having extra junk to think about while I'm eventually driving on trails and in the dunes.

I know it's second nature for you guys but you have to remember I just turned 17 and I've only been driving for about 6 months.

Ok, but how are you ever going to get good at it if that's your excuse? I've been driving stick since I was 17, so that's no excuse anyway. Plus if you can drive a SM465, you can drive anything with a stick, under semi level anyway. It's not much more to think about, because you don't even think about it after a while. Like you said, it becomes second nature.

No offense man, but if you would have left it in 3 to start and took it a little slower I'm sure you chance of getting there would have been greater. OD with the gears you have put TONS i mean TONS of stress on that tranny. Making the tranny work less and hunt for gears the less heat will build up. I've been in your position too broken down at 2 am in in the morning comming back from a wheeling trip.

As you get older, you'll appreciate automagic. Now mine, I row my auto on the Trails.
On the other hand, you're a pussy at any age if you don't know how to use a clutch starting on a hill, or double clutch non-synchros, anywhere, anytime, any vehicle, at any age!:haha: :haha: :haha: HooHAAAA

No offense taken jekquistk5, I had spoken with you guys before leaving and the consensis seemed to be that I was ok in od on the flats and pulling grades to drop it into 3 or 2 if need be. I only ran about 55 miles an hour going there so I don't think that running in 3rd would have saved it, in fact I think it might have hurt it even more. Once my momentum built up the tranny shifted into od, its not like it was in 4th and I slammed the pedal to the floor, od kicked in when the truck was well on its way down the road, just my opinion though.

Oh, and roadnotca I don't have a good response to that. ;)
