Since I have new rims (stock H1s from my other thread) I will be needing new tires. I am thinking Iroks or TSLs. They have to be 42s and obviously 16.5 rim. So what would you choose? If neither of these suit you and you would choose something else what would it be and why would you choose it

I am leaning towards the Iroks because of the reports of how well they do and how little balancing they need compared to other Interco tires.

Yes I know this is a newb thing to ask about and this is merely planning at this point as I do not have the cash for new tires:(.

Thanks

Dik

I have 42" IROKs and have absolutely no complaints.

Here's the argument for each:

The TSL is heavier and is a much older design but it has more sidewall strength

The IROK was specifically designed for the rocks, its about 10 lbs lighter per tire but its more notorious for tearing sidewalls.

I bought mine used when a set of IROKs came up for sale, I was torn between TSL's and IROKs

The sidewall thing makes me think but I run MTRs now and have had no issues with the sidewall and they are only 3 ply. But then again with 42s I will probably get in tougher situations. I really do not want to kill a new tire by a sidewall tear.

I think if weight was an issue he wouldnt be running h1s. I say TSLs, i have heard some bad things about iroks, (tearing sidewalls, and chunking treads). I like the TSLs better because you have more to work with as far as grooving/siping goes. I plan on cutting mine like all those tennesee boys do

Yet another good point. Has anyone ever cut an Irok?

I do like the look of a cut TSL. Is it possible to remove 10 pounds from a TSL by cuttin to get to weight of an Irok?

And weight is not really an issue other than getting the spare in and out of the truck. I run 1 tons and when I start breaking shafts I plan on a set of Bobby Longs. Its only money right:D

I've had MT/Rs before too and never tore a sidewall.

Carry a patch kit and a tube (or spare) regardless of which tire you go with.

Ya I will have a spare. I need to get a 5th rim first. Hell it is an H1 I could just carry a tire and break it down on the trail and mount my spare:haha:. Then I it would not be as heavy to unload and I could store rags and tow straps inside it:thinking:

The IROKs probably have the most spread apart tread pattern of any of them anyway, I've never heard of anyone cutting them.

If I got TSL's I would cut them.

Your shafts, ring and pinion, knuckles, etc. will all care about that extra 10% weight increase.

Again, I haven't run TSL's on my rig but I have run with tons of rigs that had them. I wouldn't say either the TSL or IROK really performs too much better than the other in the rocks but that's always tough to quantify (unless you ran a set of TSL's and IROKs on the same rig you can't really say which performs better).

There's a huge thread on pirate arguing over this, the opinions are pretty split.

"Its only money right" This is my motto exactly :D.

I guess with "road hazard" or offroad hazard :D if I split a sidewall I could replace the tire and with a spare it is not really that big of a deal other than changing the tire. And a 4 ply sidewall is not really like a paper thin BFG sidewall.

I thought TSLs and Iroks were close to each other so it might just be personal preference with those 2.

i just cant get into the IROK craze, so i'm voting TSL's

just some things about iroks i dont like

There ain't no secrets in this thread. Don't make me pull teeth. What are these "things" you don't like aboot the Irok. Noone is gonna flame you I want opinions and need justification for them.

Dik

you know you want TSLs :deal:

I dont like the tread depth, i dont like the poor mud report the get from many ( NOT ALL), and i dont like the way the tread looks spaced out sa far apart like that with small (looking) tread blocks.

since i have never run them i cant judge them myself far as how the perform.
everyone says they excelle in rocks and do ok in the rest of the stuff.

all in all, dont like the look and not impressed with the reports of how the perform in my terrain i like to play in ( backwoods trails/mud)

Cool It makes sense for your terrain. I do not do mud cause I hate cleaning. I also do not run inner fenders so it would be way worse:doah:. I appreciate your input. The tread depth is one of the things that sways me away from the Irok. The 42 is deeper than the 39.5 but the TSL has another 1/8" of tread depth on the 42 Irok.

Unless you have onboard air and a impact just get another wheel. Its a workout changing tires on H1's. I got my exercise for the next week last time I got tires.

I vote TSl's I love mine, never run IROK's though so...

why don't more people go with the LTB?
I like the tread pattern on those more than either the TSL or Irok
.

For the longest time the two biggest sizes were 34" and 47". nothing in between. Interco recently announced there will be more sizes available, but it wont be till later this year. I think there is going to be a 40" version. If they made a 42" LTB I would have gotten it rather then my TSLs

I vote tsl's I have em uncut and they work great. I have heard about irocks chunking and basically not holding up on heavy trucks. Also if you drive your rig on the street I understand they're soft and will wear faster. All this Irok stuff is just what I've heard. I have no experience with them.
