OH my, now we're talking.
No, that's not the direction I'm heading. As was said at the beginning of the Suburban thread, I'm following a K.I.S.S. philosophy. Simple, stock parts that can be found at midnight in the middle of rural Ontario. Basic reliability and ease of maintenance. It's a long-haul rig, so I'm going to err on the side of fuel mileage instead of big tires. XOR is the wrong template to copy. But I did get a laugh out of it.

If it were me...
Crew cab, 6bt, g56,nvg273 and 37s.
In all reality you'd be years ahead by finding a 2nd Gen extended cab dodge diesel and throw a camper on the back. You'd get great mileage for the setup and it'd be reliable.
You could waltz into an auto store and get parts...a very small amount of work can get you 80hp. Cheap too.

It would take me years to build such a rig on a old GM platform. Not willing to pay much for a newer platform right now. You're talking 1998 and forward, right? Or is that 3rd gen? I'm not up on Dodge trucks, but trucks from that year range are still pulling 10 grand in this area. Not gonna put that much money into a vehicle platform right now.

This got me thinking of a slide in camper for my dmax. Then I found the price. I can get a 32foot fifth wheel with 2 slide outs for the price is some of these slide ins.

Yeah they aren't cheap the new ones are like the yeti coolers of slide ins lol. All price not so much gof but highly fashionable.

Oh I hear ya.
3rd Gen is anything after 2002 roughly.
I just feel like a diesel is the best choice, at least if you're covering a lot of ground. Gas is OK too...it's just not going to put down the mpgs of diesel.
Hell I'd go find a 7.3 powerstroke long before I drove some 454 around for a few days at a time.
That's all true, but this isn't a daily working truck, this is a sporadic road trip truck. Paying an extra $5k for an engine that will save me a couple hundred dollars a year probably isn't a good investment in the long run (given the higher maintenance costs that diesels often have). And definitely not a winner if the truck has 500,000 miles and still demands a gold-plated premium.
I can equal a Cummins' fuel mileage with my dirt cheap, paid-for 6.2, it's mostly just a power difference. If I could get a B-series truck for $1500 I'd think about it, but I don't road-trip enough to justify an expensive rig that will spend almost all of its life sitting. At least, not at this point.

You can find them pretty cheap, but often for good reason. Roof-mounted A/C would surely get deleted, whether by choice or by tree. Would be nice to find something lower or with a pop-up roof, though. Would kind of wreck the trip when the bedroom shatters on a trail.
