i recently purchased a 5.7 liter vortec engine and a 4l60e transmission out of a 1999 2wd chevy 1/2 ton pickup. i plan on putting it in my 1986 k5. what do i need to look out for on a project like this. i have never attempted a project this complex. the biggest question i have is about wiring. i have the computer and the relay box, but how do i wire this all to the 1986 components. i understand i will need the wire diagrams for both trucks. are the diagrams from the chilton books appropriate or do i need to get the diagrams from the gm service manuals. also will the headers i have on my 1986 5.7 bolt up to the new engine ok? everybody's input on this will be greatly appreciated. oh one other thing will my 208 transfer case bolt up to the 4l60 ok or do i need to be looking for a new tranfer case?

Hrm, big thing I see here is the 2WD 4L60E is most likely longer than the 4WD 4L60E and probably has a different output.

My experience is that anything short of the GM/Helms wiring manuals for your exact year will be generic JUST enough so that you pull your hair out trying to track down one wire or so.

should be able to buy a 4wd output shaft and use your factory 700-208 t-case adapter. only problem is the 4l60e (or 700 for that matter) has to be taken down to pretty much a bare case to install the output shaft.

go to a gm dealer and make friends with one of the techs. then get him to print you off all of the schematics for the 99. i doubt anybody still has an 86 k truck service manual at a dealership. but you never know. get copies of that if you can.

good luck.

Public library systems are an amazing source of free info as well. I would expect larger cities to have more/better manuals.

i dont really want to disassemble my whole transmission to change the output shaft, should i just look for a transmission from a 4wd model and try to sell the one i have?

if you dont want to take it apart, then that is your only option.

i've never taken a transmission apart, is it a fairly simple task to tear it down and rebuild it with the new shaft.

it is not a simple task for someone that has never built a tranny before. all it would take is one piece put in backwards or incorrectly and you are screwed. i say have a tranny shop do it, or make friends with the tranny rebuilder at your local gm dealer. while he is swapping the shaft, get the wiring diagrams while you are there.

not without some changes.

you may get away with a pump from a tpi camaro.

should be a direct replacement for an 87 tbi pump

I was looking into this and hit the same snag

but dont fear..the internet is here!

https://shell7.tdl.com/~jags/4L60_Order.html

you will need to go to the page and find the 12 page acrobat document, makes it sound pretty simple, basicly you need a new reluctor ring and to drill and tap the out put for a yoke,

there is no need to tear into the whole tranny, just the back half, we are doing this on a truck right now for my friend joe, with the pattern off the tranny we are using a factory adapter and bolting up a t-case

IF I DONT HOOK UP THE COMPUTERIZED SPEED SENSOR FROM THE VORTEC ENGINE, WILL IT TRIGGER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR HAVE SOME OTHER BAD EFFECT? MY T-CASE HAS A MECHANICAL SENSOR. HOW DID YOU SOLVE THIS ON YOUR BUDDY'S TRUCK.

WHILE I WAS LOOKING THROUGH THE LINK THAT YOU TOLD ME TO LOOK AT, I NOTICED THEY HAD A BOOK FOR SALE THAT WAS CALLED "CHEVROLET TPI & TBI ENGINE SWAPPING MANUAL". I WAS WONDERING IF YOU USED THIS BOOK OR WOULD RECOMMEND IT.
