Started with a simple front brake job on my '73 K-5 (350-350-203) and I wound up tearing everything down to the axle shafts. Now I've got what I think is called a "spindle seal" and can't figure out where it goes.

There were two seals that I knew of, the "oil deflector" and the "spindle seal". I figured out the deflector cause the original was intact. The smaller seal is about 1-5/8" in diameter. It must have disintegrated cause it was no where to be found when I disassembled. Also, it's V-shaped and I'm not sure which way it goes on.

PLEEEEEEEEASE help. I really want to get this thing back together ASAP.

THANKS!!!

Its been a while since I've had one apart but if you look at the bottom side of the spindle, there is a spindle bearing and I believe a spindle seal also.

I'm kinda confused with what your sayin, but if the seal is bad your ganna need to buy a new one (preferably Ferderal Mogal) and you just tap it back into the hub spring side down. If you look carfully enough there is a spring around the rubber in the seal, and it is on the back side!

Hold the spindle in your hand while looking at the back side you should see a spindle bearing that the stub axle rides on. The small spindle seal goes on top of that bearing with the V part facing you. There is no spring on this seal and it is all rubber and will just lay in place.

Pretty damn good from memory on my guess then. Its been about 3 yrs since I had one apart.

Here is a pic to help make things more clear where it goes.

Awesome! Thanks! So, in the picture the V side of the small seal is facing out? Mine must have completely melted away. I just did the other axle and didn't find one on that side either.

Thought I would bring this to the top because it took me a while to find. Thank you 4x4high for the pic:bow:
My axle only had a bearing and the "slinger present, same as the 3/4 im building:(

My problem is Advance, Oreillys, and autozone dont carry the SBK-1 with slinger and thrust washer. The local jobber place closed b4 i knew I needed this. Called Napa and got nowhere, but think I have found the NAPA part # online and will call when they open.

Does anyone know of a # or name that Autozone types would recognize 'cause Ive spent awhile searching. TIA, Kenny

Every auto parts store will recognize the SBK-1 kit number as it's a universal number for that part. The slinger however does not come in the kit and some have even been known to not come with the thrust washer.

None of the locals had a kit with the thrust washer except NAPA, and that washer is PLASTIC!! So i nabbed the one I have out of the axle im building. One local place to check during normal busisness hours and then the dealer. There is the SPICER kit with the washer, but I try hard to buy local. I guess we will see

The kits used to give a bronze thrust washer just like the factory one but over the last several years ALL of the kits i've seen now come with a plastic thrust washer if the kit even comes with one at all.

Scott, What do you think of the plastic washers?

They don't last as long as bronze, but they will do the job.
The shafts don't really have that much pressure side to side, it's mostly their weight shifting ans rubbing, as long as you keep them greased they should be fine for a few years.
The bronze will last longer than plastic if they happen to get water in or don't get greased enough.

I would try to avoid using the plastic washers if you can find the bronze washers. If you must use the plastic ones just make sure there is plenty of grease on them and they should be ok.

would a lack of thrust washers cause really bad vibrations at speeds over say 50ish?

Lack of the thrust washer will allow water and dirt to enter the spindle bearing and into the wheel hub and bearings. It will also allow the axle to move further outboard and cause issues with the locking hubs.

where can i find these thrust washers? Autozone sure as hell dont have them, and Advance is the only other auto parts store in my area.
