I've got the frame pretty well wire wheeled and stripped to basically nothing (wiring, brake lines, fuel lines, etc. all gone.)

At this point, I'm trying to finalize what I'm going to do liftwise for now but have some decisions to make and need some ideas and/or input.

The interior of the K5 is getting bedliner and I'm seriously considering doing the outside as well (Durabak has both smooth and textured in the same tan color). I'm trying to figure out what would be an appropriate and long-lasting finish for the frame.

I do need some help with that decision as I've been looking at a lot of different things and just don't have enough experience with that type of finish to make a decision. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with something they've used that they can recommend (or more importantly NOT recommend)?

I'm also hoping someone has some input on Durabak and whether or not I can expect durability out of it. As a side note, I was told by some guy at the paint store that you can't put bedliner over new paint/sealer/etc.

If anyone has any information on that I would be greatly appreciative as I can't seem to find anything that references new paint being bad, sealer being bad instead of paint, etc.

bedliner can be put over 90 day old paint...that would give it enough time to evap the solvents in the paint...they put bedliner on new trucks everyday, but they are usually oven baked paint jobs.

So how clean is the frame?....bare metal everywhere, spotty rust, spotty undercoat...get more of a detailed description with the prep you've done so far.

If clean bare metal, clean with a metal prep product like wax and grease remover, or alcohol, then an etching primer (the product of choice:

) its zinc chromate, and should be the first product applied to bare metal, after that a urethane primer, then catalyst type paint (like Imron), or Nason single stage should hold up pretty good. If rock bashing or other harsh contact, perhaps bedline the lower frame rails too.

Thanks for the link, ryoken. Actually, that other post answered most of my questions regarding paint vs. bedliner and putting paint down prior to bedliner.

76zimmer: The frame is basically bare metal. The wire wheel is REALLY cleaning it down to nothing so been trying to use the wax and grease remover diligently and hitting it with MetalLock (by SEM) at this point as Kalifornia appears to have decided that zinc chromate was bad for pretty much everyone so I have to find another option. Supposedely this stuff can be a high build primer or, with the addition of one more chemical, a sealer.

Based on both your and ryoken's comments, I'll be looking for some Nason paint in an appropriate shade for the final finish. Maybe I can find something that is "extra" hard and resistant to scraping off. If not, oh well.

Thanks for the comments and information as it did indeed help more than a little!

Eastwood has lots of stuff for frame coatings. Have no idea if it's any good or not but I bet you could find reviews on it.
