I've been lurking for a while, love the look of some of these truck and has given me alot of ideas for my own. Now onto my own it is 1979 K10 with a 350 np205 4 speed manual holley intake and 600cfm carb dual 20 gallon tanks. 10 bolt front 12 bolt rear
I have owned this truck for about 3-4 years and so far i have had the carb and distributor(hei) replaced at a local shop. I have replaced all shocks head light harness upgrade from lmc, radiator, thermostat, and hoses. and all belts, and plugs wires and all fluids with in the past year) This summer i was having issues with the truck dying and not wanting to restart we thought it was a fuel issue as the fuel filter was not getting a lot of fuel in it. So we replaced the sending units fuel pump and all rubber hoses and blew out the hard lines and tank selector valve. The truck was running better then it ever has started on the first crank every time ran smooth and quit(for this truck). I couldn't have been happier. I even got to take it offroading a little got it stuck had it pulled out drove it home no problems. Then the next day I hopped into the truck after work to head across town I got down the street and the truck started acting up again and died on me. I got it pulled over open the hood looked around and didn't see any thing so i got it got it started and started to head back to the house when it threw the belts witch lead to the engine over heating and the battery draining. I got towed home. I put the battery on a charger for a couple of days. When i went to start it I pumped the pedal once then turned the key and it started right up. It was running a little rough but i decided to let it idle and warm up while i was taking the trash to the curb. It died in about 4-5 minutes it didn't sputter and died it just died. I tried to start it again and I got it started but it wasn't running good at all it felt like when I pressed the gas pedal it would try and stall the when the pedal was let out it would idle up then it died again and I couldn't get it started. I put it back on the battery charger. Today I went out check to see if distributor was loose it was not I pulled the #1 plug it was clean and in good shape. pulled distributor cap it was in good shape. The truck did start 3 different time but I could never get it to stay running longer then 3-5 minutes and like the last time the first time I started it it fired right up the after that it would be harder to start.

Sorry for the long post but any help or even a direction to look would be helpful

thanks for your time

fuel. air. spark..

pull a plug wire and verify spark...

it sounds like your having fuel issues again.. check fuel pressure to carb.. either put a gauge inline, or disconnect at carb and pump into container...

i take it this is a mechanical pump? than filter(glass I'm guessing), than carb... if you've got gas to the carb, it sounds like you've got some schmootz in the float bowl...

yes it is mechanical fuel pump the inline filter(plastic) then carb
I will try this and see

Also I had a buddy say his guess was timing because of the slight backfire. I'm just wondering if that could be valid

If its a Quadrajet check to see if it has a filter in the inlet of the carb, could be clogged.

holley intake and 600cfm carb

I'm guessing it's a holley...

OP.. doubtful it's timing.. that usually doesn't just change.. a backfire doesn't necessarily mean timing, lean conditions can cause popping too...

I'll wager it's a fuel issue... could be a stuck float, try wrapping on the float bowl with a screwdriver handle.

What would cause a stuck float a a Carb that's only a year old without many miles on it

eh, could be numerous things, off camber got it hung up, bowl got low due to lack of fuel, chunk of crud, etc..

the sight glass for the bowl will be a slotted plug on the side of the bowl.. it should just be dribbleing out the hole while the truck is idling...

the adjuster for the float level is the slotted screw and jamb nut on top of the bowl..

you can verify it's stalling due to lack of fuel by using a squirt or spray bottle with some gas in it, whenever it starts dieing out, give it a bit down the carb and see if comes back...

Sitting idle with ethanol gas can cause a lot of carbs to act up ,they are better if driven often, and not allowed to varnish up from not using the truck much--only takes a month or two for todays gas to go sour.......

I'd look for spark after it dies, sounds like you may have a pick up coil or ignition module dying, despite the fact the distributor was replaced--seen many "rebuilts" that failed in short order due to poor quality aftermarket modules and pick ups...they die after some run time, then magically work again after letting it sit awhile...

It could be fuel related too though...seen a few trucks with metal fuel lines rusted on the top side which lets air get in,and dont always let gas out!...and short rubber sections of hose near the rear tires that gets soft and gooey inside and forms a clot, and eventually starves the fuel pump...which might also have issues, check the fuel pressure and volume at the filter after it stalls---...the choke might not be opening enough and flooding it after it warms up some too...

All rubber line where replaced in the past 2 months hard lines are rust free after it stalls the fuel filter is about 1/4 full

check fuel pressure out of the pump into a coffee can...

So I unhooked hose from Carb and cranked seemed to be flowing well I tapped on the float area tried to start and nothing I poured a little gas on the Carb and I got a back fire through Carb( flame and everything ) it has never done that I even jumped a little:D

So now it won't start? Is the carb full of fuel? When u move the acc linkage can you see the acc pump shot in the carb? It pops so u have a spark. I once had a coil go bad and when it did fire it blew a muffler apart.
Also when it's running and quits is it like u turned the key off or does it slowly die?

And yeah I could not get it started back up even with pour some gas right in the Carb. I will try again in the morning
