I know this probably goes in the IFS section but I figure Ill get more response here.

OKAY the stupid question. Will a 8 lug 9.25" front diff fit into a 6 lug 8.25" front diff truck if I use the halfshafts and knuckles?

The situation: A friend of mine built a 96 K2500 extended cab short bed 6" lift 3" body lift, a really nice truck, if ya didnt know the guy you might be inclined to call it a mall crawler. But he uses it, and wheels it pretty hard.
His brother however got drunk about a week ago took the truck and rolled it down a hill 8 times. Complete loss on the truck and the brother was hardly scratched. I went to look at it today and tried to evaluate if anything is worth saving. The lift is trashed along with the rest of the body. His insurance adjuster wrote it off and let him keep the truck.

It does have front and rear ARB lockers and the compressor. It also has a zz383 crate engine and a rebuilt 4l80e but we dont know if they are damaged from being upside down.

To get to the point he told me I could have anything I wanted off from it if I pull it. The rear axle is a SF14b :dunno: So basicaly I could make my 1500 a 2500 and get ARB lockers for just a little bit of work.

IF!!!! its doable!!! I could scrounge up the A-arms and other stuff that may be damaged to convert the front end. But I dont think I would use the lift either way.

Also this may fall through as he said he wants a newer truck but if he finds a good deal on the same body style 2500 he is going to keep the stuff. I didnt mention that the ARB's would fit in a newer 2500, but I feel like I should tell him.

Just got off the phone with my friend told him to keep the lockers and get himself another 8 lug truck even a newer one, as they would fit. When it comes to friend you just gotta do the right thing right?

Yeah, the 3/4 ton stuff and 1 ton stuff interchanges, but not the 8 lug stuff.

You did the right thing in letting him know that the ARBs will fit elsewhere, I am sure that karma will reward you greatly for your good deed!

yea the moral thing and the fact that if im going to do that much work to it I might as well just SAS it and do it right 1 time.

Even though I have had hell with IFS trucks for some reason I still dream of simple mods to make it reliable. A pipe dream Im sure anyone with a IFS truck has had. Its basicaly the only downfall to these trucks. I mean I like the truck but Im sick of fixing the front end. What kills me is those "lucky" guys that wheel their ifs truck all the time and never seam to break or tear things up on them.

I shot myself in the foot again though and bought the posi-lok for this truck ($268.75 shipped) as I have already put 2 actuators in it 1 used and 1 new and its broke again. It feels like throwing money away sometimes. I get a bad feeling Ill put the posi lock in and blow a halfshaft or something :doah::haha:

posi-lok link for those interested

Posi lock wont make you blow anything. Unless of course, you spin your tires a lot, and snag on something. Then it would be no different if you used the factory system.
