A while ago, I posted about my hydraulic winch, and about how I wished I had an under-hood pump. I mentioned that I had seen a company that made kits for them.

I also spoke about the advantages of having on-board hydraulics.

Automatic jacks, lift gates, winch, self opening hood, hydraulic driven air, even hydraulic impact wrenches.
Once you get the pump, the rest is just plumbing.

However, I was unable to find where I had seen the kits for sale.

Ran across them tonight. I'm sure there are others, but this is the one I saw. One of these days, I am going to buy a kit for my truck and get rid of the pto pump.
It works OK, but I cannot back up with it in gear.

Anyway, here is the place. I have not done business with them, so cannot recommend or not recommend them.

Long time listener, first time user. Hi everybody thanks for having me.Your hydraulic winch could you power it with a 12 volt hydro pump unit. I have one on the back of my truck for my lift box i thought it would be nice to use it for the winch also. At present i have an electric winch on the front but i don't think the motor is going to last for much longer. So theres a chance to change it to hydro further down the road.
Regards
Charlie

Charley, the hydro unit for a liftgate is not going to work for a winch.
For several reasons.

First, the motor on it is not rated for continuous duty. Its going to overheat real quick on a long pull.

Also, hydraulic fluid gets hot when working. The most common way to get rid of the heat is with bulk.
The rule of thumb is one gallon of fluid for each gallon per minute you are pumping the fluid.

20GPM like my winch wants, I need a minimum of 20 gallons in the tank to give it time to cool off.

The gallon or so in your unit would get hot real fast unless you added a radiator or extra capacity.

Last, but not least, winches are huge power hogs. Your power unit could develop enough pressure to turn the motor and pull yourself out, but it would have to do it at low capacity.

In other words, SLOW. if you went with a smaller motor to speed things up, you would give up pulling power.

Not a bad idea though. I once tried to hook a Ford starter motor to my shaft driven PTO winch.
The idea being that if the engine stalled in deep water, I could convert it to electric temporary and pull myself out of the deep water.

Didn't work, not enough torque.

Northern Tool sells engine mount plow pumps with electric clutches that put out 11-29.1 GPM,that should run the winch and pretty much anything else nicely..part # 1082-1601--399 bucks..
