High idle was intermittent for a day or two. Now it's all the time. No apparent vacuum leaks. Any ideas of where to look next?

I pulled the air cleaner assembly and started the truck. Man, it sounded like a plane! It sounded like it was really pulling a ton of air through the tb. Is this normal? Never changed.

That's not normal. The Throttle Body has an Idle Air Control (IAC) Solenoid (also called an idle stepper motor) that should limit the air through the Throttle Body with the engine at idle. EFI scanning equipment (like AutoXray http://www.autoxray.com/product_category.php?id=338 ) can read the IAC steps. I own an AutoXray Scan Tool, so it's a litter easier for me to figure out what's wrong. Without knowing what the IAC counts really are, I'm only guessing what the high idle problem is.

Maybe try a completely different throttle body to fix the high idle problem? Sometimes a good used throttle body is less expensive than a new IAC? Maybe the high idle problem is not the IAC at all?

Where can used or rebuilt throttle bodies be purchased? How much? and how much is the IAC?

I don't know what the prices or availability of used / rebuilt TBI's in your area are.

I often use Craigslist to find used auto parts, or I call local parts stores / local salvage yards. One time I purchased a good used TBI on Craigslist for $15, but usually the asking price for a used TBI is $25 ~ $45 depending on the condition, and how long the seller has been waiting on a response for the posting.

Prices for a new IAC can vary from about $25 ~ $85 depending on the OEM number your TBI IAC is.

Thank you very much Dave W and british slave. I appreciate your time and help. One more, perhaps stupid, question. Where is the IAC located in the engine compartment?

Okay. Sorry. I guess it's on the side of the throttle body? I think I will try that first. Maybe one of those computer readers would be a good idea. how much for those gadgets? Man, this new fangled stuff is unreal.

Dave,
Thanks for the help. I replaced the IAC and the truck is idling normally again. $30 at Autozone. I fiddled with the torx head bolt at the front driver's corner of the tb. Looked like it controlled the idle. this was before I asked. I didn't move it much to realize that it didnt help and returned it to the previous position. Idling fine--should I reset anything? Also, that screw was VERY easy to turn (like finger easy). Normal? Thanks again for the help!

Cool, Glad to help out. It's not easy to troubleshoot over a keyboard. The torx head bolt is usually covered with a plate. Yes the torx screw will be easy to turn. Nothing to reset, the IAC should reset itself when engine starts running.
