Hey all,
So after the engine is warm, when I put it in park, the engine idles very high. If I spike the pedal, it will go back down to normal.

I have checked the fast idle cam, but I am not sure how it is suppose to work. When I move it, the regular (first start/ cold) idle goes up or down, but the issue in park still happens.

can someone please explain the fast idle cam to me? Should it move automatically or should I have to move it manually?

Any thoughts on what this issue could be?

Thanks again!

Manual or Automatic choke?
My manual choke will only shut off when I get off the choke and bump the throttle.

A manual choke will have a cable coming into the cab to apply the choke similar to a lawn mower.
An automatic will not. If I am correct It relies on temperature to apply and as it heats up due to engine temp it will turn off.

Someone jump in if Im incorrect on the auto choke operation

if you have the electric choke on ur carb theres a coil in it that heats up and opens the choke up after its warmed up. The coils eventually take a crap and keeps the choke closed. On my edelbrock its a little black cap looking thing on the side of the carb. When its idling high take the air cleaner off and see if the chokes closed. If it is you found ur issue :D

(happened to me once, I zip tied the choke open to get home)

So, I think that I have an auto choke.

You have an electric choke, but it's disabled. That might be why isnt not working. The metal cap looking thing on the intake manifold in that picture is covering the pocket for the heater element. That is assuming you have the stock carb and not an aftermarket one with an electric choke on the other side. It's doubtful you have a manual choke since electric chokes were pretty common by then and they are just better.

check your throttle return springs.if they are worn out, they may not be shutting the throttle down(something might be sticking).next time it happens, put the truck in park and pop the hood.if you can manually push the throttle lever to make the idle return to normal, it's the springs.

The throttle springs are good. The cold weather is killing me with this choke-nonchoke issue now...

The carb is a Holley R7456 4360 450cfm

I just learned that it has (or should have) a divorced choke.

This is where I am stumped. It looks like it might be capped off or am I just missing the rod?

Anyone know if a divorced choke carb can be converted to an electric choke?
