I've been looking at high performance mechanical fuel pumps and they all come with different psi measurements. Some are as high as 15 psi, others as low as 6 psi. Does anybody know which would be best in this regard? I'm running fuel up to an Edelbrock 1406 carburetor, and I need to fuel supply to the carb to be reliable during off road use. Has anybody actually swapped out their stock fuel pump for one of these high performance ones? Which one did you use and why?

Off road you don't need a lot of fuel pressure 4-6psi. On road, high performance carbureted engines can tolerate up to 7-9 before the needles start bypassing. Generally it's about flow vs psi for carbureted systems. 15 psi would be really problematic without a regulator and return line.

i ran a 15 psi pump and it would start pouring gas out of the vent...i had to put a regulator on it and turn it down to 7 psi....then it worked great

On anything other than a drag race motor that actually needs it I wouldn't consider a high performance pump.

I run ~3 psi to my Q-jet.

i run electric pumps and the ones i use need to be regulated, i usually set fuel psi to 7 1/2 for most everything with a carb. some applications require more and others less.
