Holley froze again joys of winter

Glow plugs for carb heat???

You put 6 glow plugs into a spacer under the carb to heat it up?? ---I'll bet it works good, but arent you fearful of something getting TOO hot,and starting a fire??--I hope the glowplugs cant come on accidently--I dont know if I'd trust a timer,a manual pushbutton that returns to the "off" position when released sounds like a safer way to go--but hey,if it works for you, good show!

My neighbor said he had carb icing problems too,on his old ford granada--he "fixed" his dilema by putting a 150 watt floodlamp next to the carb all night in the weather it acted up most--he said it worked great until the motor was started and running for a few minites--then the fan blew enough cold air onto the carb to bring it right back to square one.....he thought about getting an inverter to run the floodlight constantly, but decided to buy a new EFI ford escort instead..no more carb ice problems!

Nigsbro, Can you give us all the details on how you did this? It sounds to me like something that someone here could produce in some quantity and resolve this problem for a lot of people!

Hi there
I will get some pics taken of the unit and tell you how I made it was real easy and works well.

I like the glow plug idea.

I think the best way to switch the glow plugs on and off would be with a temperature switch screwed into the intake manifold. That way when the manifold gets up to temp the glow plugs would automatically shut off.

You could also add another temperature switch in series with the manifold one to serve as an interlock to prevent the glow plugs from turning on if the air intake is warm (such as in the summer)

If someone else comes up with a cheap and easy glow plug spacer I'll try to spec out a cheap and simple control circuit.
