ok I know this is a weird one. I was making a 9/16's and 1/2 inch t handle to pull a rocker box and head off of a n-14 diesel. and it got me thinking, what kind of tool ahas everyone made? pics are cool.
 
That's a good idea. I didn't make it personally but years ago my dad made aninsert for his jack to pull tranny's with. It bolted right up to the crossmember and kept it level for pulling em out.

I lost it somehow last summer and he's gonna have to make another one. He's had this for 15-20 yrs now :(
 
I have the usual assortment of chopped, bent, modded wrenches, etc any 25 yr mechanic would have..

But I have tons of custom marine tools.. cutdown pipe wrenches, assorted pressure testing blockoff plates, custom plumbing pressurizing stuff, electrical test leads, puller plates, seacock tools, etc...
 
The best tool I saw someone made(not me) was something a customer showed me last week. It was a pair of vice grips he cut the jaws out of, then he cut apart a vice block from a brake flaring set. The portion that holds the line securely. He then welded that to the vice grips. It was intended for brake lines. When you want to disconnect a brake fitting and the line wants to twist with the fitting. Just grab the line with the appropriate sized hole in the vice and loosen the fitting. Said it works like a champ, and that he sent the design to Vice Grip but they didn't do anything with it.

Home made car dollies out of an old computer floor that was wrecked out at one of the jobs I've been on. Only added the casters and the angle.

At work we have alot of machinery with roll pins that hold on gears, sprockets and other parts. I got tired of swinging a hammer and trying to hold a punch to knock out rusted pins.

So I cut the end off of an air hammer bit and drilled a hole in the end of it. Turned down some 4340 on the lathe and tig welded it together.

Tada, custom made air hammer punches. Plus I can make them long so the handle on the hammer doesn't get in the way.

Just be sure to use hardeded steel for the punch. One of our new kids learned this the hard way. He asked me what I thought of the punch he made. I told him it would break. He didn't listen. Took him 2 hours to get the broken punch out of the sprocket. He wanted to use mine to punch out his and I told him no. Live and learn.

Easy one .... cut down 9/16 12-point socket on about three feet of 5/16" rod, bent in a L-shape ... can you tell I had to do a LOT of timing adjustments and dizzy swaps there for a while? :D

Give me a day or two, I have a section of 4340 solid stock at work that I am gonna make my own 7/8 allen out of and then heat treat it for removing my kingpins:D. I will try to get pics of the machining and all but cameras and my work are a sensitive issue:D

Got the allen cut and bent.

I will have pics up when I get home. It still needs to be heat treated after the bend though so no in-service pics:D

I will get a pic this weekend. I made a coil spring compressor in high school to fit the coils on the front of my Fiat spider. I have used it for all sorts of things. to depress the piston in brake calipers. clamp leaf springs back together to get the center pin back in. its faster then a C clamp since I run it in and out with an impact. I have used it to spread tires open to patch them.

I made it for only one specific use and have continued to use it anytime I have to clamp or spread something. for something a 16 yr old kid made I have had it 13 yrs now.

It is going to heat treat next week when we do another part. I am shooting for a 52 rockwell. It should be tough but wont shatter if I hit it with a hammer:D

Very nice.

I think I talked my boss into a new lathe. Mill will be next. The ones I use now are beyond worn out. Wouldn't mind having them at home tho.

I sold mine and now I want another one. Funny how you don't use a piece of equipment for awhile and think, I don't need that anymore. Then you find yourself at work doing goverment projects that could have been done at home:doah:

I have made those exact tools for the old N14.............


I made a tool for doing a bearing roll on an N14 too while inframing..... its a 1/4" bolt shaved "just so" :D


works like a hot damn. you can bang new mains in, in no time.
