Homebrew hydro assist DONE

[ QUOTE ]
How is the speed of the big cylinder?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not bad at all, I wouldn't call 2" big though. They had a 3 1/2" by 8" stroke at the store. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Hey i dont intend to hyjack but how did that hobart work out for ya?

I just wear welding gloves and a t shirt, and of course a helet.

Anything else is optional.

Yea, im suprised welding burns dont hurt as much as grinding burns.

WHO HAS SPARKS ALWAYS LAND ON THE BACK OF THEIR HEAD?

Well, that's good to here. I've got my box drilled and tapped just need to round up a cylinder now.

one more thing that goes on the endless list /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

Hobart worked out just nicely.

Actually we used my buddy's Lincoln to get the top portion burned down, then I bought it home, finished the welding, and put the ram on and plumbed it.

Both were 135 amp welders on 1" thick plate.

Grinding sparks suck. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I actually have a burn right under my right eye right now from welding without my shield. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

I've got the helmet habit down a while ago. A few days out of commission thanks to flash burned eyes will do that to you.

well it's my k5 that tim welded , i helped.
it works so well did well for a stock k5 with a 305 and welded

but it has 265/75/r16's on it bfg mall terrains. i was impressed need to take pics of the body damage now

No comments about me welding up a 10 bolt rear axle in a fullsize, only my lack of gloves? /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I was gonna ask why someone was putting hydro on a 10 bolt. Never thought I'd see it.

So could we be expecting a write up? I'd love to see one, with lots of details. I don't know crap about hydro or how it works, was that 100 for EVERYTHING? Or just getting and mounting the ram? What kind of pump/controls are there with this?

You must be confused. It wasn't hydro assist on a 10 bolt. It was hydro assist on my dana 60, and welded spider gears on my friend's 10 bolt rear. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

As to this burn under my eye, I was doing the, "tack, look away, check out your weld, move gun, look away, tack" method and I caught a spark. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

I bought the steering box from another member already drilled/tapped for $100 a long time ago. It was about $100 for the ram, tabs, hoses, and fittings total by the time I was all finished with it.

The controls are a stock steering box, it's just hydro assist.

If I find an orbital valve I might just say screw it and go full hydro though.

Looks good I hope to have mine done tonite. Any pics of how the tabs look. Glad to hear the 2" ram is working well I was a little worried but not much.

I don't drive on the road anyway so maybe that's why I don't care.

I could take a pic of how the tabs look, but they're pretty simple. Torch them out, file fit the pins, and you're going to have to steer and watch the driver's side to make sure the tab doesn't hit the ram itself. I ended up having to trim mine.

Yes I am very confused. So you just take a normal steering box and drill/tap more holes in it? Does anyone have pics of this? Is that something that has to be done at a machine shop, or can a backyard mechanic do it?

Do a search. There was a post with a link to blueprints as to where to drill and tap the box recently. Basically their are two "veins" of fluid that run inside the box. You drill, tap to 1/4" NPT, and install fittings to hook to the ram.

This is true. BOWTIE has pics of this on his website of where to put the holes.

Hey Tim, do you have pic of how you did the mount on the axle side? I'm going to get mine on this weekend and I'm looking for ideas. Thanks.

There ya go sandman /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

hey tim, watch those pins you have on your ram. i don't know what's up with them but a cupple guys that i run with that have them loose them from time to time. /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif

Thank you! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Looks rather strait forward. I was wondering if some type of gusset was needed but it looks like that is compensated for with just the thickness of the metal itself.
