Hooray! Smog exemption!

The way I get around all the B.S. is I am in the military with PA plates and PA license, but I work in mass. Since I'm in the military I can retain my origial home of record no matter where they send me, and since I am not in the state I am not required to keep the inspection current. P.A. is pretty easy to pass though, compared to Jersey where I used to live anyway. as for a body swap, maybe just grind the vin# off the frame, prep it nice nice and powder coat it. How are they to know that its not just an old frame you refurbished and didnt notice a vin# :haha: . !@#$ on them for making it so hard to keep a vehicle legal anyway. Hell I always though that the vin was only in the dash and doors, I guessed wrong

Well first, thats why I'm asking, whats it worth to take off. And second, I ride my 60 mpg :eek1: bike everyhwere cause theres no way I can afford to pay for gas for my truck. And third, please dont tell me you beleive all the global warming BS :surepal:

For sure I know what you mean. I'm gonna rip off all the smog crap I can just cause I can, I want to remove what either really doesnt do anyhting at all or limits my trucks performance
 
Ok wait a sec though...you say you don't drive it on the street that often which is fine but the next time registration/smog/etc. rolls around and you don't do it b/c it's just an off-road toy what do you expect to do trailer it EVERYWHERE from then on?

No...I'll renew the registration, I wont have to do a smog check. And I dont have to drive it anywhere to renew the registration, at least ive never had too.
 
hmmm thats interesting b/c I have to have my truck smogged every two years...
 
Keep in mind he is wanting to do a body swap so he'll end up with a pre-smog registration so no more smog checks.
 
??? Where is the vin on the frame? I cant recall ever seeing the vin stamped in the frame on any truck I have owned.

How did the police find out about your swap?
 
I didn't do a swap, which is why I was saying no one would ever notice. I had different smog "issues" related to using a registration sticker that wasn't mine for a couple months.

This has perplexed me as well. I stripped the entire frame of a 80 crew cab and the only numbers to be found was a part# on the top side of the frame right behind the shackle on the drivers side. Wonder if it was a certain year that they started putting vin#'s on the frames.

When doing a body swap since the frame VIN number and the body VIN number will no longer match you have to have the CHP inspect it and you MUST have paperwork for BOTH vehicles. Once the CHP does their inspection and gives you the stamp of approval then you're all set. Don't count on it being as easy as you think. Also keep in mind that just because the vehicle might be of a smog exempt year it is illegal to remove any emissions equipment that came factory on the vehicle.

i didn't read the whole thread but my buddy got his car inspected by CHP when it was registered and they only look for 2 location of id. so you may not have to match frames... i think they matched his door and window vins and that was it for the lazy chp.

When doing a body swap you MUST have paperwork for BOTH vehicles. The CHP will issue a new VIN number based on the frame VIN but in order for it to happen you must have the paperwork.

Well when I asked the dmv they said to just regsiter the new vin number from the new body
 
Now go ask the CHP who has the power over DMV.

EDIT: My buddy just went through this with a body/frame swap. DMV says register the body, CHP says register the frame, guess who won CHP
