What can I take off of my 350 on my '77 (or '74 depending on who you ask) k5? I have hedman headers (barely fit, fulll length), so I'm taking the smog pump off since its not hooked up to anything anymore anyway. Does the charcoal canister actaully do anything besides smog? Would I want to take it off? What else is "extra"? Anything worth taking off?

The charcoal canister draws the fumes from your gas tank, and feeds them to the carb. Removing the can will probably result in a gas smell (and dangerous fumes) under the hood.

Before anyone helps any more I think I need to know how you are here in Cali w/ me and are smog exempt w/ your '77....

I'm swapping the body over from a 74 except the fenders, hood, bed, and the cab. But hey the engine's '74, the rear end is 70 something, there isnt much left thats "77".
BTW: I talked with the DMV today to see if this is ok..I may have left out a few unimportant details but yeah....

well checking to see if its ok and actually getting the stamp of approval are two different things...if you are swapping vin's or w/e you expect to do you have to get it signed off I do believe.
When my buddy swapped in a 5.0 mustang engine in his '69 bronco they said it was fine but it took him about three trips to the inspection station @ DMV before they would approve it...

Just something to keep in mind bro...especially before you go yanking stuff...its not like you can just walk in and say oh its a '74 now and expect them to just take your word.

Well I asked what I would do if I were swapping awhole new cab on to my truck since the VIN would be different obviously with another cab. And they said you just register the new truck as if I never had it. So yeah...thats what I'm gonna do. I may swap the whole cab I dunno, I dunno if I'll go thru all that work. I'm not gonna be ripping everything out, at least not untill I register the "new truck". And I've never had to take a truck I bought to be inspected by the DMV or anything, I could be wrong and they'd make me do something like that I'm not sure. I dont get why your buddy had to take his 69 down to be inspected either. Are you supposed to ask the DMV about stuff like that? I know all kinds of people that swap in different engines I didnt think you had to get the DMV's stamp of approval on it or anything.

When doing a body swap since the frame VIN number and the body VIN number will no longer match you have to have the CHP inspect it and you MUST have paperwork for BOTH vehicles. Once the CHP does their inspection and gives you the stamp of approval then you're all set. Don't count on it being as easy as you think. Also keep in mind that just because the vehicle might be of a smog exempt year it is illegal to remove any emissions equipment that came factory on the vehicle.

yeah its illegal but once he gets it approved (I guess I should say IF he gets it approved) he never has to go back to a smog station ever again. Even with a title change pre '75's don't have to go to a smog station...

This is true, but around these parts if an officer decides he wants to see under the hood and see's that the emissions equipment has been removed or modified they can impound the vehicle. They have state certified smog inspection police officers around this area just for this purpose.

hmmm thats interesting, we've never had a problem with it and my dad's '75 Furd is breaking all sorts of laws...
I'm always surprised they don't pull him over, its a 390 bored .060 over running full length headers and dumping past the TC.

Hope we don't get any of those officers around here :)

This state is getting ridiculous on certain things. It's no wonder why everyone is selling their homes and moving out of state.

As long as we're on this subject (mini hijack :)) since I'm moving to Texas for college isn't my technical residence going to be in Texas? So could I re-register my truck as a Texas truck so that smog would be a little less intense...then when I move back to Cali after school could I just keep it registered there?

Avery,

Many states have laws about registering the vehicle after moving. In Utah you have 60 days to register with Ut and after that you can be prosecuted. It is pretty serious stuff. I don't know how it works for college, but after you return to Cali you would have to re-register in Cali. The only way you could keep it registered in Texas would be to have an address in Texas, and even then I have seen crackdowns on people doing that type of stuff. They tend to take it pretty seriously.

yeah I can see how it can be taken seriously but @ the same time I've seen literally hundreds of vehicles that have out of state plates (college students) so I think I better look into it. I'm sure if you are there for college they don't force you to re-register in the new state.

Definately check into it. I believe you are right in that college students don't have to re-register, but if you move your registration to Texas you would definately have to move it back to Cali once you returned.

I see plenty of people driving with out of state plates, and I see the same vehicle day after day, it is always tough to prove. Once they can prove it they really crack down.

I hardy drive the truck on the street anyways. It already has headers that arent street legal...so yeah its a little late . And I ran it with open headers for a week (drove it maybe 3 times short distance) and passed by probably 2 cops. And somehow they didnt pull me over:dunno:.

Man am I glad I live in Mojave County where we dont have smog! I remember those days living in Cali where your all stressed out about getting passed on a smog. When it didn't smog you had to scramble to get it fixed.

Basically I have pulled all smog off of my 81 K5. I have had no issues of gas smell from removing the charcoal canister either. My K5 runs better than it ever has. I also built a block off plate for my EGR valve, removed my smog pump and cut all the smog bs off of my smog legal headers from when I used to live in Cali.

Avery,

In Cali if the vehicle spends more than 11 days a month in the state of Cali you have to register it in Cali. You will aslo have to get a Texas Drivers license to register a vehicle in Texas.

Instead of swapping bodies, why not just swap the frames?:D

I used to have yearly inspections on my 71 VW beetle because my insurance company mandated it due to the age of the car. Although I haven't been asked to have the blazer inspected so maybe they changed that.

Don't do anything illegal if it's related to the DMV or campus police! They "probably" won't catch you with a body swap, but if they do, it's not funny. Ask me how I know! :doah: You get to have your picture taken at the police station and go see a nice man in a black robe who decides how much money you have to pay to stay out of prison.
