Hot, Hot, Hot

The easiest way to lock the fan clutch in is to pull the spring out of it's little slot on the clutch housing and rotate it CCW (assuming the spring is wound in a CW direction) until it is to the side of the mounting boss. Here's a pic:

That should lock the clutch even when it is cold.

Yup, what Max said... I ran around for weeks like that... noisy, but works...

I've been running around like that all summer. The stupid clutch (yeah, it's a Hayden POS) won't engage until it hits 230 or so  So, I simply have it locked in so I don't have to watch my temp gauge soar (and my AC get warm) until the clutch decides to engage, Once the weather gets cooler I will put it back.

And yeah, she roars good. Especially since it is turning a DMax fan :D

I rotated the spring, but I don't think it locked the clutch because I can't hear a difference when I start it or after. It still overheats with the A/C on. :(

Less than 10 minutes, probably 2 or 3 in this weather, It's probably a good 130 under the hood in the direct sun to begin with. I can find out tomorrow. Why does it matter? What are you thinking?

Also, today when I had it over 215 idling in park, I reved up the engine I could hear the fan roar and it cooled right down. I can't see how this could be anything but an airflow problem, but I don't understand why the clutch didn't lock up and fix the problem when I moved the spring. Maybe I should see if I can somehow make it to the dealer tomorrow and pick up another clutch. First though, I think I'll go grab a cheap tach at checker and make sure I'm idling fast enough to engage the clutch, sometimes it seems slow. Anyone know how fast that should be?

I have looked at your build thread and this post twice trying to see if we've missed anything. I'm sure the answer is no but just in case. Do you have underdrive pulleys on the truck for some reason?

The only problem I see is that you are having to pull air through the radiator, both large coolers, and the a/c condenser. That on top of the fact that it is just so damn hot their could be a problem. Is the electric fan you installed hooked up and working?

I've tried having the aux fans on and off and it didn't seem to make a difference in coolant temps (only difference was a/c temps). No underdrive pulleys that I I know of. The tensioner was replaced in June after my second new a/c compressor was squealing the belt. It is a lot to ask of a cooling system, but it ran cool last year, and lots of other guys run cool all summer. There's no reason it shouldn't be able to keep up as an all new system cooling a stock motor. And yet it is NOT!! Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I really appreciate it.

Its still possible the Fan Clutch you purchased is not the correct one. GM Fan Clutches have a code on the front of them so that when you purchase a new one you make sure you get the correct one for that vehicle. When you purchase parts from someplace other than the dealer it can throw a wrench in the works sometimes. I work with the City of Phoenix as an Auto Tech. I cant count how many times i would have to try 2-3 Fan Clutches before we got the right one. If you havent gone to the dealer yet i would do so. Did you try placing a fan in front of your vehicle at idle? This will surely tell you if the fan clutch is operating as designed.

HOLY MOLY!! I just called the two dealers for price quotes and they want $175+ for these things. I got the part number and checked gmpartdirect and $173. I might as well go electric if that's the best deal I can find.

I can get you one for ~$130 +tax, part number 15671898. They said it is the heavy duty one that is also used on the BB.

I just cross-referenced the gm number in the napa system and according to NAPA I have the right Napa part. I'm at home with a sick kid so I can't get the tach or return the fan clutch yet.

Whoops, I'm slow. He(part counter guy) told me it was part no 15969544 after I gave him my VIN. Same? PM'd ya Jason. Thanks.

WOW, better than GMPD? Whats your connection?
Wholesale, I work at a shop, and that is wholesale cost. The 15671898 is an alternate for the 91, and it is the heavier duty, since it is also for the big block, the parts guy said he sells more of these, and it should lock up better.

p.s.- minimull, your p.m. box is full. :D

I personally wouldn't waste your time/money with the tach. That is unless you wanted one anyway. When I bought my truck, the PO had the idle so low it would stall out going around corners . He said he liked the sound of the motor chugging .

Anyway the fan operated fine. That said mine is carb'd so your situation might be different?

Yeah, I think I was just grasping at straws since I was sooo frustrated.
