Last week I was driving my '86 K5 Blazer home from having Thanksgiving in West Texas. It was a bit cold outside, so I had the heater and fan motor blowing on the second to slowest speed. After running a couple hours I started smelling the distinct smell of hot plastic, and I noticed the fan stopped blowing. I know the smell of melting plastic very well, and that's what I was smelling. I immediately turned the fan off, and I rolled the windows down to vent out the toxic stench. The next day I turned the fan motor on for about 1 to 2 seconds to test. The fan seemed to run fine, but I immediate turned it off again before I burned anything up.

I have never had any vent or fan issues to date with the exception of replacing the fan motor about 3 years ago with an Autozone rebuild. I guess I am most concerned about the hot plastic smell, and I'm scared to death that the wiring might be damaged. Last thing I need is to melt the fan circuit wiring and/or burn the truck down. A normal person would expect a fuse to pop before a large load to build up on a fan circuit, so I'm confused where the hot plastic smell would come from. Does anyone have any words to wisdom or troubleshooting pointers you could pass along to me?

the hamster cage / fan is all plastic . maybe the motor got real hot and started melting it or the hvac box unit its self .

and since you have changed the fan before its a few min pop out and check item . otherwise i think just dig in and report back .

Did you notice a squealing noise before it stopped. If so, then I’d suspect cheap bearings were used in your Chinese rebuilt motor and they ceased up, causing the enamel on the motor windings to melt. Then when you tested it out after the bearings cooled down and shrunk they freed up. Just a hypothesis though.
Are you able to easily get to the pigtail of the motor to measure the resistance/continuity of it?

The resistor for the blower motor speeds can get red hot too,if anything gets on it ,it'll burn it and make that stink...
Could be a mouse got in there recently and met it's fate in the heater box ?..
