How Bad is Installing an Engine Sleeve?

I found an engine on craigslist with a new forged crank, piston, rods, basically everything needed for a complete short block for $500 but the block is bored .040 over and has a crack in number 7 cylinder and needs to be sleeved. Is a sleeve viable and reliable? Kinda leery about that part of it. Anyone have input that can tell me yea or nay on the block? Any idea how much putting a sleeve in should cost?

If it's a small block don't bother.
It's it's a big block it probably worth it.
Sleeves are about 90 bucks to install and done correctly, they don't really affect anything.
I would run an engine with a sleeve if I had to.

I was just wondering. I've had mine posted (Vegas) for a long time at 800 and never got any offers, even low ball stuff was absent.

Reason for asking, I was thinking of the value of the Eagle forged crank, new Comp cam/roller lifters, basically all the parts are worth more than the asking price but didn't know if the block was worth trying to salvage. I'll probably take a look at the stuff and maybe just get everything BUT the block.
When I built the BB for my '67 I had a chance to get a 427 block but it was sleeved so I passed but always wondered about sleeved blocks.
ETA: The engine is a SBC roller casting 14093638 (87-95) to eventually replace the engine in my '88 K5.
Thought about building an engine to MAYBE throw in later for more performance. Nothing wrong with mine just too much time to think about toys.

At the price of new crate engines, I will not build an engine.

I'll give those a look. Just thought crate engines would be super expensive. Thanks.
Crate engines aren't all that. Do your research. All depends on what you want to. When I built my 406, is was much cheaper to get the parts I wanted and the HP numbers I was looking for by building.

Lots of crate engines like blueprint/atk aren't that great anymore. The only crate engine I would buy would be a GM performance parts engine.

I'm going to keep it at this point. Thanks for the heads up about KSL I appreciate it.

I'm just trying to get some insights ahead of time so I don't screw up when I finally get to the point of putting something together. I'm thinking, after doing more surfing that I might want to put together a 383 since they seem to be good on torque and HP. They seem to be really popular. I'll you tube some builds and keep researching before making a firm decision.

BTW, what's KSL?

Ksl is Utah based classifieds.

Ksl is similar to craigslist but better and runs mainly in Utah Idaho and Wyoming

No problems with a properly sleeved engine the 377 destroker in my 75 step side has all 8-holes sleeved ,

My engine had been punched .060 (way to far on a 400) and had cracked a cylinder . But the block was in otherwise great shape and had a splayed main kit

I had 8 sleeves installed and then bored And decked , that block is now stiffer and stronger then it ever was . It cost me just over a 1000.00 to have all the work done , which is still cheaper then an aftermarket block , or finding another stock block and paying for all the machine work to get it to where this engine was.

That`s the first I`ve heard of said 75 step side? I know you have lots of trucks but I don`t remember you talking about that one before?

So this is the truck that actually brought me to CK5 , I was looking for info on adapting a NP205 to a 700r4 .

It’s current form is 377 with brezinski racing vortec heads , LT4 “hotcam” , jet stage 2 q-jet , msd 6AL , MSD distributior, 10-1 compression . 93 NV4500 mated to a Ford NP205 . Semi float 14-bolt with a Detroit and 4.56 78/79 Ford F-150 extended cab Dana 44 with Chevy outers , ARB , RCV shafts ,4.56’s

4” suspension, 2” body , 37” MTR’s on slot mags with Staun beadlocks , A/C , Cruise , decent stereo ,

Capabale daily driver rig ,
