how can i get more power from my 454?

Just an update, the engine is back in the truck. I may start it this weekend!

It's all put back together now. I'm trying to start it but it really doesn't want to play. It's possible I flooded it or I'm way off on timing. Trying to do this by your self is not advised. I can't turn the key and mess with things at the same time lol.

Well re-time it then go from there.

I have a remote start that I made for mine, but then I have external starter solenoids also.

Oh man I can not get this thing to start unless I have it floored and even then it's not smooth. It's popping and burning really rich... I took my holley carb apart , cleaned it and put it back together. Now I can't figure out if I messed that up or if my timing is that far out. Any thoughts?
Here are the specs on my build.
It's a 361959 1973-85 454 block with the 336781 113.0cc oval port heads.
I have the Edelbrock Performer 2.0 intake manifold. Flow tech long headers an MSD HEI ignition and a crane camshaft part # 133801 here is a link with the details http://m.summitracing.com/parts/crn-133801 .
Oh and I am running piston part number L2465f.

The carb I'm running is the truck avenger 770 .

I am completely lost

Why do you say it was 180 out the first time?

I'd look at the timing again. It seems like every one I know that's had problems with initial start up had the timing off.

Double check you plug wire order too.

Do you have access to another carb to try?

Is the cam timed correctly? Was it degreed in?

Sounds like a tooth off.

I matched up the timing marks but admit I didn't "degree" the cam. Some say you have to others say you dont. I'd hate to do that over again.

The first time I tried starting it I was getting nothing except backfires out of the carb. Spun it 180 now it starts and fires but sounds like some cylinders aren't firing and it smells really rich. pulled the plugs some were black like it was really rich some were just wet with fuel and clean. I replaced all the plugs and put on a new cap and rotor.

Ok. Maybe pull the valve covers and compare rocker movement to see if any are too tight or loose.
