The rod should have a clip on the end of it. Usually it rotates off the rod then the rod can be removed. We always called them carburator clips. Basically it is a round hole that the rod pushes through then a clip that is attached to it that kind of flips down over the rod. That way the rod can't pop out. It is kind of hard to describe, but the LMC catalog has it on page 24 of the current K5 catalog
ok...there is a clip where the handel connects to to the rod but it dosnt seem as it if it will let it come off??? should the rod come out with the handel???
Negative, the rod does not have to come out with the handle. Just apply downward pressure with your thumb. You should be able to feel a somewhat sharp edge along the top of the rod. That is the clip. Once you pop it off, you can remove the rod by pulling it toward the inside of the door. It can be kind of a PITA.
just got done removing mine. gotta take a pick tool, and pull on the lower edge of the metal clip to get a small tit out of a hole, and then it will slide down with a screwdriver to allow the rod to come out. I always wear those medical rubber gloves when working in there, keeps me from cutting my hands all up.
