I've tried to lift it but it doesn't open...is this because I am not strong enough or is there something else?

need more help . there heavy with a broken spring.

also few pair of vise grips to hold it up when you get it there . pinch the track so the roller wheel cant let the door drop .

and if you don't know how to replace and tension the spring DO NOT PLAY WITH IT ! you will get hurt fast .

if it's a solid wood door they can be heavy without the springs carrying the weight.

do not mess with those springs, my uncle got his hand caught in one....not pretty.

I used my floor jack to raise the overhead door far enough to get a chain attached to my engine crane to lift the door open high enough to install the springs when I first installed the door during the garage build..the door is 10x10' and wood,so its a heavy beast...

I wouldn't screw with torsion springs either--I had to unwind a pair in order to remove the door where it was installed originally (got it for free when a warehouse my brother worked at was being enlarged)--I also got a pair of tracks with double "stretch" type springs to use in my garage,I didn't want any part of the torsion type after nearly getting killed trying to unwind then 30 feet up in the air on a sissor lift table...it was hellish enough installing the "normal" springs..

In that case....... how about we share the answer:

The correct answer to this question is don't! If you need to get a vehicle out it is possible to run the door, but it definitely isn't recommended. If there is only one spring on the door it is not safe at all to lift because the cables will not be tight and entangle in the rollers.

If you have to get a vehicle out ATTACH the opener arm to the door and have two people lift each side of the door and have someone hit the button for the opener. The opener should hold the door up while you drive the vehicle out. Keep the vehicle outside until you've had a trained door tech come and replace your springs!

Coming from a drywall hanger- Do NOT *F* with torsion springs. Just did a garage job laminating firecode over original layer. The door didn't have 2x6" pads for the rails and spring so it got interesting making the door open right. GC kept fretting and tinkering trying to make the door seal to the floor when it didn't seal right before we got there! He loosened the spring brackets and nearly put the thing thru the rock. This was with both rod ends still tight, damn thing tried to spin with half an inch of room! The torque on those things is incredible. If you don't know exactly what you're doing save yourself a hand,or a face, and call the door guys!
