How can you tell if an alternator has a built in voltage regulator?

I think GM got away from external voltage regulators in the 60's or early 70's at the latest.

Yes--1972 I think was the year that GM went to the integral regulator.Keep us posted on the generator--I'm interested in building one myself. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On GM alternators you have a stud and nut on the back which is where the power is and then there is a little plug. The plug is the internal voltage regulator. If you need one with out it then start looking at 60's vehicles.

yes 72 was the last year of the externally regulated charging systems, 73-up GM chevy olds buick caddy pontiac etc are all internally regulated "one wire" system

good luck
