how do i pull my th400

something let go in my transmission on the way back down to school, luckily it is under warrantee still, that i was only 130something miles from San Luis Obispo and i have AAA plus, so i got it towed to a nearby town.

i now need to find a friend or somebody in town with a garage and who is willing to help me pull this thing so i can ship it back home.

noooow to get to my question, having never done this sort of work before on the vehicle, how do i go about it

step by step would be great, a helping hand would be fantastic

Wow there's alot. first to unbolt the exhaust if it runs under the tranny.
you'll need a jack and some hand tools (ratchets, sockets, extensions and such) or power if you have them.

put jack under tranny and transfer.
pull bellhousing bolts they'll be 6 holding your tranny to block. *9/16" socket*
take off shift linkage. *cotterpin or some sorta hitch pin lookin thing*
pull torque converter bolts (holding torque converter to flywheel. they'll be 3 i believe) *5/8 or 9/16 bolts*

your crossmember bolts/nuts which hold the tranny transfer to frame. *11/16" nuts maybe*
shouldn't need to take loose your transfer case shifter i don't think

pull the tranny fill tube but make sure you havesomething catching the fluid that WILL leak out it may have been bolted to tranny bellhousing

pull modulator hose off tranny in right rear and speedometer cable off transfer


sure there's more but can't remember and it should be ready to drop..??
 
Dont forget torque converter bolts from the flex plate too.
 
Buy a repair manual or two they will pay for themselves. I have a Chilton and a Haynes both are different.
 
x101 on the manual. GM manuals are cheap on eBay if you can wait for them to get shipped.

Do you have tools and a place to work on it? It's gonna be tough to do in a parking lot, but not impossible.
 
no i dont really have a place to work, all ive got is the parkinglot at my apt complex

if anyone in town has a place give me a ring, 253 961 1942

check with your complex manager before even thinking about doing this in the lot. Most apartment complexes get uppity if you so much as change oil. Pulling a tranny WILL make a mess, no matter how well you drain fluid.

I recently pullde my th350/np203 combo in my apartment parking lot. I checked with management there first, they said as long as it's not on jackstands when I'm not there, and I clean up any spills it's ok. Luckily my truck is tall enough to drop a tranny without jacking up the truck (but only by a couple inches). I dropped the tcase and trans seperately. The combo of the two is borderline too heavy for most trans jacks, and difficult to balance and control as you lower both at the same time.

Doing all the work by myself, with a socket set, wrench set and a couple pliers/hammers took just about 2 hours. I had a screw type trans jack as well. I'm also done it a few times on different vehicles and at least twice on this truck, so there were no surprises in store for me.

Don't forget to pick up a big bag of speedydry (coarse kitty litter) and have a drainpan handy. Transmissions bleed tranny fluid like a stuck pig.
 
You're going to get trans fluid on the parking lot...for sure...just something to keep in mind.

I highly recommend getting an actual transmission jack, especially for a 4x4. A harbor Frieght one works just fine. You may also need a regular jack depending on your truck's lift.

Get a 1/2" line wrench to get the cooler line fittings off at the trans casing.

The driveshaft yoke bolts should be 7/16".

The bellhousing bolts will be best tackled with a combination of 9/16" sockets, extensions, u-joints, and box-end wrenches.
 
oh and make sure you scotch your tires BEFORE you pull the driveshafts. I learned my lesson on that too

sorry i havent updated in a while, school has kept me busy

i found a place to take the truck to work on it and leave it for a while, a guy i know has a large concrete pad, tools and everything

Edit - DOH just realized your in cali...
yea im bummed im not back in town, the trans in under warrantee and everything,

now i have to decide whether to ship it home to let them check everything else out, or just pay for the new converter, either way i have to put it back in myself

So why would you think it's just the converter (do you have other information that hasn't been posted)?

I'd get the whole thing back and get it made good-as-new under warranty if possible.
