How do i tell a 14FF-g.o.v. from open carrier? anyone have pics of both?

If you are looking at the side of the ring gear, there are three indentions to a Gov-Lock! This is where the spiders pivot, an open carrier has four indentions... /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

IIRC you will also see a big locking paw in one of the windows. Youll see the back side of it. Im going back a long time since I seen a Gov. but I think its weighted maybe. Its what locks the differential.

BTW is this the post you were referring to? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

They are holes, by what Batmanjr is talking about. About 1" diameter holes, around the carrier halves.

3 holes will determine a Gov-Lock.
4 holes will show an open carrier.

I have an open carrier in the shed, but would need to get it out to take a pic of it.

yes /forums/images/icons/wink.gif ok, who has a diggy cam and one lqying in the garage? /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

No, the arm, or springs, are not visible on the 14FF rears. Even though there are small windows, or holes, in the carrier, its still too hard to tell whats in them. Thats why the best method is to count the spider shaft holes. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

That was the Gov-Lock that was "custom-made" into a spool. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

The pic shows the 3-pin spider carrier halves.

I've never tried a 14FF spool. Nor have I seen one offered by any aftermarket company. This "custom-made" one is the first I have ever seen.

The only downside to a spool is the fact that they will be harder on your tires and the driveline since when turning a corner, one tire has to spin faster than the other and there needs to be a slip in the carrier so the tires will wear evenly and the driveline will not be subjected to harsh and abusive response.

If you have a spool and turn a corner, the tires are gonna chirp pretty good. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

The DL is more forgiving than a spool. It will allow for tire slippage when turning.

The biggest thing a new owner will have to get adjusted to with the DL is the constant engaging/disengaging of the teeth/gears when they mesh. This engaging/disengaging will be in terms of a loud "BANG" which can be heard and felt.

Manual tranny's working with a DL will feel the banging more than an automatic since when you shift, there is a pause between shifting and during that pause, you will feel and hear the DL work. Nothing to worry about though, its telling you that its working properly and nothing is getting broken or whatever.

Automatics working with a DL allows it to be forgiving, too. Just expect some banging when turning and when shifting into gears.

A DL can be operated quietly by gentle driving and turning. No hot rodding or stomping on the gas pedal will allow the DL to perform almost as if its not there.
