How do winches get stolen? How to prevent?

Thats what I was going to point out. Lock it up! But if they still really want it they will take it, just will take them longer. Welding the bolt or nut just seems to much of a pain to remove or make changes, not to mention weakening the bolts.

Secuity Bolt Locker

This 11 Gauge welded steel bolt locker secures up to a 9/16” diameter bolt, preventing access to the head with a wrench. The bolt lock is great for securing winches, racks, mounted tools, and other bolt on items.

The locker is secured with a double bitted 10 tumbler Tuffy lock with an exclusive cam latching design.

personally... if they want it... dont make it too hard... or they will steal the entire truck... then you will be really ticked that you made it that hard.... :haha:

Just put some 110 arc booger welds on the bolt heads. Just a little heat and not strong enough to give you too much grief later. Besides, how many times are you gonna remove that winch. It will slow them down, and at a quick glance if the thief sees welding, he may just walk away.

That's what I was talking about. I didn't mean to make some awesome weld to hold the nut in place. Just a small tack that will keep it from moving or coming off the bolt. There shouldn't be enough heat to untemper the rest of the bolt.

another option might be to take a piece of 1/4" flatstock you have laying around, cut out a little 1"x1" square piece and butt it right up against one of the flat surfaces on the side of the bolthead you wanna secure. Put a couple of tacks on the piece of flat stock to hold it in place. This would make it pretty much impossible get the nut off without a torch, and it wouldn't explose the actual mounting bolts to any heat of significance. Might be a good idea for us rookie welders... sometimes a "small tack weld" doesn't end up small. lol.

That is a good idea. A weld on nut lock. I like that.

I love this place!!

One word...

RIVETS!! :haha: :haha:

Steal a few from the nearerst skyscraper going up,and peen those suckers good!..then only a torch will remove the winch!..

Since the invention of 18V cordless sawsalls,(usually stolen from contractors!)--crooks can and will saw off anything bolted on to your truck they want, whether the bolts are welded over or not, they'll cut off whatever they have too to get it off if they want it badly enough..they use them in lots of housebreaks too, they saw the deadbolts or door hinges right off the doors!.. :eek1:

They are pretty quiet too, compared to a grinder or torch..if they want something on your truck real bad, they might just haul it away on a ramp truck!..and you might never see it again--or wish you hadn't when they are finished with it.. :doah: :(
