How do you feel, psychologically, about the 4-cylinder in the Silverados?

I wouldn't be surprised if the new 2.7 4 banger would beat any 6.2 diesel in a full sized truck...4 banger probably weighs half as much for one thing..

Just think--years ago we had 230,250 & 292 straight sixes in trucks all the way up to C-60's..

Pretty fair point. We have forgotten we aren't that far removed from those days. But it easy to forget with the crazy factory numbers we can get these days.

I can remember riding in a 1961 GMC C-65 school bus with a 235 straight six (might have been a 261 ?) ,with a 4 speed,(SM420 ?)--that poor thing had to haul 65 kids all over town,up hills, screaming its guts out,it rarely was in 4th gear to,due to many stops and grades to climb..but it did it day after day,for years...
I'm wondering what the longevity of a 4 banger will be ,being pushed to its limits daily if someone decided to haul weight or tow with it on a regular basis..I suppose one of those newfangled automatics with 8 or 10 gears might help it live, but maybe at the expense of the transmission, always hunting for the "best gear" for power vs economy..

I drove a C-20 company truck in the early 80's, it had a full size enclosed service body on the back ( think utility company style box with double doors on the back ).

It had a 292 six with a 4 speed with low gears in the rear...

It was a dog to drive.... scream it up through the gears every traffic light change...could never stay up with the flow of city traffic.... wasn't to bad on the highway, but 75 mph was topped out.

This is kinda what I would expect from this new 4 banger... mediocre performance in a full size truck..

The great equalizer in all this that many are missing .

Turbocharged, Direct injection .

They can run whatever timing and boost levels they want with out fear of detonation .

Hell the base engine is 10.0-1 comp. the old 235’s only had 8.0-ish-1 and would detonate their brains out when they got loaded heavy and hot .

Combine that with a transmission that keeps the engine in it’s sweet spot and you have a pretty decent combo for Joe Average that just needs a pickup for hauling a 4-wheeler to the woods , or the occasional trip to Home Depot.
