So a guy in our club has an '88 2500 pickup ("new" body style w/ IFS) with a blown 6.2 he is going to pull and throw away. I am interested in a few parts for spares but mainly if it had a single plane J-code intake. My K5 currently still has the stock C-code but I have a dual plane J-code sitting on the shelf for sometime this summer, but have heard the single plane is slightly better so might as well check on what this '88 had (my understanding is the single plane J-codes were used on the new style IFS trucks).

He doesn't have a camera, but I sent him pictures of the different ones so he could compare...but he seems confused and keeps saying "it kinda' looks like this one, but also this one...". These are the styles I am aware of:

1. C-code = dual plane with the EGR valve, lighter duty trucks up through??
2. J-code = dual plane, no EGR valve, heavier duty trucks up through??
3. J-code = single plane, no EGR valve, newer heavier duty trucks??
A. do the 6.5 trucks use this, or are what they have interchangeable?
B. I know Humvees used a short style single plane J-code

Were there any other versions of 6.2 intakes used?

I don't know all of them but I do have the 3 you mentionned:
C code
J code dual plane
J code single plane tall (this one is in my 88 crew cab)

Do you know if the single plane tall intakes are only on '88-newer heavier GVW trucks (i.e. the new styles with IFS)??

The crewcab is the older style all the way to 91 and it has the tall single plane.

I just bought a bunch of HMMWV engines (Im nuts) and they all (well one doesnt have an intake) have a short single plane intake. Once I get my cucv rolling again Im gonna swap one of the HMMWV intakes on and see if there is any gain versus the dual plane intake that is one it now.

Hmmm, heard something about a different mounting of the air filter on the single plane intakes. Could you verify this?

yeh the studs on the dual plane are in a line with each other, and the ones on the single plane are 90* rotation, so you would just turn the factory lid 90* from original and it should work fine.

IFS truck ones had the fuel filter mounted on them too(on the back side). Or at least the one at the junk yard I jsut went to had one like this. This was a non turbo light duty 2500(six lug)

There is a civilian truck single plane, and a H1 (Hummer) specific single plane. The truck version has the same air cleaner mounting studs orientation as either the C or dual plane J codes. Only the H1 versions have the 90* rotated studs, plus the H1 are low rise.

aahh, remember that! There are some height problems with the H1 manifolds and the standard air cleaner mountings on c/k trucks. I'll look over at TDP for further information.
